childcare money from working tax credits

LAURACOLLEY · 03/05/2008 16:14

I'm currently at university and am due to finish at the end of june 2009. I have a 2 year old who attends nursery full time on week days. I have earned zero last tax year (07 - 08) and will probably earn zaero this tax year (08 - 09). My partner earned 18750 before deductions last year (07 - 08). Last year we were entitled to about £2000 worth of child tax credits but no working tax credits. My partner is predicted to earn about 19200 before deductions this year (08 09). It is the LEA and the university that pay 100% of my sons nursery costs at the moment but all this will stop at the end of June 2009. This childcare costs are £573.75 a calendar month (132.40 a week) and this is all weeks or months of the year. The question is is how much can myself and my partner earn this year (08 - 09) to be eligable for the working tax credits again and the 80% of the childcare costs next year (09 - 10) if from June 2009 I was working 16 hours a week. And then does anyone know or can predict how much we can earn next year (09 - 10) and not have to pay any of the childcare payments back and still get some for the following (10 - 11) tax year. After that my little lad will be at school. I thought I'd better ask about the following year becuase I'll take a 16 hours a week job back on the checkouts or something until find a degree related job. This I hope will then put me on about £18000 or £20000 a year. It's just that how am I going to search for work and attend interviews up and down the UK with no childcare paid for? There's no way we will be able to fund a nursery place on my partners wages alone.

fair enough

my sister says she'll check out the free childcare that people with partners that work but are under 25 get, she seems to be adament this isn't right, seems unfair if new costs aren't being covered when they were before

WallOfSilence · 06/05/2008 20:59

It's certainly not right here in NI anyway.

My sister couldn't claim as she has a child & is supported by her partner. (who earns 14,000 a year, nowhere near what the OP's dp eanrs)

They asked my sister if she lived alone & she said she shares a house with her partner. (Since the new laws about partners & husbands & common law partnerships come in it is no longer just a husband that supports a wife, a prtner should count to, it does here as I said)

I think good luck to you if you can get it all paid for you, I guess I feel that a lot of people are being left out of getting c/care paid for them if this is freely available. Why aren't more students being made aware of this? Seeing as the cost of c/care is the one thing that puts student parents off applying for uni places it should be advertised about the grants & c/care payments..... don't you agree Laura?

all these women givin lauracolley all this advice and shes bein so ungrateful, how about stayin at home if u cant find adequate childcare that both u and the tax credits are happy wid,

ssd · 07/05/2008 09:16

wallofsilence, thats the whole thing

if you tell them you do have a partner you don't get the costs paid ( my sister is adament about this)

but if you tell them you don't have a partner you do get help towards the costs

and since Laura has had so much help I'm assuming she wasn't straight with the LEA, it's the only conclusion I can see

LAURACOLLEY · 07/05/2008 13:15

i have filled in any form and includes many notes on ourselves. I ring up the LEA and they say becausee we are not married and under 25 years old I am not reliant on my partner. Honest truth.

I've been wondering about this so I looked up the student finance information ON directgov. It says

From your local authority (or the SLC)
The Childcare Grant
The Childcare Grant is available for students who have dependent children and a low household income.
This includes students who are lone parents and students married to other students

All the way through it mentions partner's income. Your DP's income does not come under the classification of a low income, by any means. As you say they aren't taking him into account have you told them you don't live together? I don't think being under 25 is relevant TBH

LAURACOLLEY · 07/05/2008 17:38

they know we live together. i always go into all details and make them know the full situation. i wouldn't like to have any problems with them not knowing all correct information or be given the form back to complete.

I wasn't entitled to the c/care grant as my dh earned £6 over the limit!

You are right ssd, no-one I have spoken to over the past day or two is entitled to anything towards the cost of c/care if they are supported by a partner who earns much more over minimum wage.

Anyway, I have had a long hard day working to support my family & pay my c/care for my degree related job to be able to pay Laura's childcare my taxes!

1dilemma · 07/05/2008 22:59

this is so funny is it a joke?
Laura you are going to get such a shock when out here in the real world your childcare costs more than you take home.

I too am relieved my taxes aren't being used to pay for your babysitting, I'm surprised you want all that childcare rather than to spend time with your ds since you'll be doing all that work soon.

I am also surprised masters/lecturers jobs are so easy to get when a 'job' would need so many interviews

As for attending all these interviews you'll just have to work round your dp shifts and leave like the rest of us do!

Surprised you don't appreciate the luxary of studying full time!

ssd · 08/05/2008 21:35

I just don't think we've got the whole picture here and I don't think the LEA has either

childcare isn't paid if you have a partner earning over a set amount and thats that
