Am I being adequately paid?

I’m seeking feedback on whether my current salary reflects the responsibilities of my role. I work as an Ops Manager for a facilities company based in home counties about 15 miles outside london. My role includes:

Reporting directly to the Managing Director and being part of the senior management team, contributing to strategic projects. Managing a small team (2-3 people), including one individual who isn’t a direct report but relies on me for daily guidance due to their own line manager’s remote and infrequent availability. Providing support and advice inc HR advice to a team of 35 regional managers. Maintaining the company’s ISO certifications. Acting as office manager, handling repairs and maintenance as needed.

I earn 36k, which given the above mix of operational, managerial, and strategic responsibilities, and the daily stress I'm under juggling multiple responsibilities, to me feels low. I’d appreciate insights into salary benchmarks for similar roles. If you have any comparable experiences, please share! I mostly enjoy my job apart from the workload, but am wondering whether I'd be better off looking elsewhere for something less stressful!

I’d say you are grossly underpaid. Have you not looked for equivalent roles in your area to see comparable salaries?

LittleRedRidingHoody · 04/01/2025 19:39

I think it can vary wildly - I've seen Ops Managers in Facilities and Retail earn about that, yes - even with those responsibilities. IMO it's grossly underpaid, but pretty standard.

In other industries, very similar roles - and responsibility - go for much more (60-70k plus in London). I would really recommend looking outside of Facilities and into Tech/Private Sector for the same kind of role. You could look at Office Management, HR Operations, Health and Safety/Facilities Lead type things and get a better understanding of how it compares. FWIW I bounced from experience in a lesser paid industry (retail) to a similar role for a tech company and my salary doubled overnight (and then doubled again within a couple of years once I proved myself).

To many variables to give an answer
do you know the pay scale of the managers above you
how does it compare with similar roles in different companies

Eskimal · 04/01/2025 23:23

If you’re managing people then you should be on at least 40
if you have financial responsibility for budgets add 5-10k more
if you’re on a senior exec team then you could request an investigation into equal pay with men on the team

Seems low - other considerations though are number of AL days, sickness pay, flexibility, time to travel to work and home, cost of this travel, paying for external training. You could earn more for example but lose 2 hrs a day seeing your children, partner, friends and family, for travelling. An extra or less 5 Al days a year can mean a lot to some people also x

CointreauQuaint · 05/01/2025 18:41

Bloody hell, no you are not! How long have you worked there for?

Standard holiday (21 days plus BH) no sick pay. But very close to home so only 30 -40 minutes commute most days (main reason I don't seek work in London tbh, I can't face the train journey!)

This makes a lot of sense, thank you.

To be honest, it's difficult to know what an equivalent role would be as I my role varies so wildly from day to day!

You're underpaid, UK salaries are awful.

Crikeyalmighty · 05/01/2025 19:03

I could do that job - and no I wouldn't for that money-even in home counties should be around£44 to£55k

northernballer · 05/01/2025 22:45

I do some bits of that role and am on 40k for 4 days, I think you are underpaid as ISO certification alone is sought after.

I also get a 12% bonus and 10% pension which should be taken into consideration.

Someone once said to me companies pay you just enough to stop you leaving, so employees should do just enough to avoid being sacked, I never used to agree with that but after a horrendous year at work where I was unrewarded I'm starting to think there is something in it!

TokyoSushi · 05/01/2025 22:49

My role is reasonably similar, but significantly less HR responsibility, I earn almost £60K

BridgetCleaver · 13/01/2025 22:57

I'd put you at about 55k

ButterfliesnWaterfalls · 13/01/2025 23:06

Lol I earn 10k less than that and currently do facilities management- line manage 12 staff… smaller projects and support leadership. Do HR in terms of my direct reports.

😅 grossly underpaid!
