New Job Training

I recently secured a job as a home carer, and I'm really excited about it. As part of my onboarding process, I am expected to shadow an experienced carer to learn the ropes.

However, I have a question that's been on my mind:

Do I have to travel in their car, or can I drive myself?
I would prefer to drive myself for several reasons.

Firstly, I feel more comfortable and in control when I'm behind the wheel.

Secondly, part of the reason I applied for this job is that I can drive, and I would like to utilize this skill and feel that getting used to driving to new areas part of the role.

Lastly, I'm not very comfortable being a passenger in a stranger's car.

I understand that traveling together might be more convenient for coordination, but I would appreciate some advice from experienced carers or anyone who has been in a similar situation.

  • What is the usual practice in these situations?
  • Would it be unprofessional to insist on driving myself?
  • How should I approach this topic with my supervisor or the experienced carer?

Any insights or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your help!

You’d probably be better to go in the same car, I expect it would be more difficult to find parking for two vehicles. Maybe offer to drive if that’s your preference but I wouldn’t make to much of a fuss about it, otherwise it will give the impression that you are difficult.

It wouldn't be common for expenses to be paid for two vehicles, plus in thius scenario you would be talking to the person you are shadowing about things that you are observing.

You don't get to "insist" on anything. You can ask, but I think you are being precious. You are shadowing them, in their job, and it would be normal for them to drive.
