Civil Service Interview Task: What to Expect and How to Prepare?

I have an upcoming Civil Service SEO-grade interview where part of the process involves completing a task based on an example situation they provide. The task aims to understand how I’d handle the kind of work expected in the role, based on the example situation provided.

Has anyone had a similar experience with Civil Service interviews at this level? What kind of tasks did you face, and how did you approach them? Any tips on how to prepare would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance for your help!

Can you give some more information about the role as that could be any number of different jobs and situations. It could be a supervisor level administrator, middle level professional/technical grade, scientific researcher etc.

We ask applicants at all levels to write a fairly straightforward letter as this demonstrates that they're able to use MS Word and write competently, use formatting, spell check, change font etc as obviously we don't know if they've filled in the online application themselves or had help.

We set this task at interview in our team. I've used a couple of different scenarios - one was providing a docket of information and asking the candidate to write a briefing for a minister on the key points (testing ability to quickly and accurately draw out the most important bits of information from a lot of text). The second was providing a docket of information to make a recommendation on whether a project should be funded (testing ability to analyse risks, benefits, benefit to the taxpayer, costs etc).

Study the ‘Behaviours’ and their associated ‘Strengths’ listed for the role as these will be the criteria they mark the task against.
e.g. If it’s ’Making Effective decisions’ it might be how you lay out your thought process around a decision, including risks and benefits of the options.

Thanks for your comments on my previous post. The role I’m interviewing for is at SEO level in a central government department – a secretariat role. The interview task involves handling a situational work scenario typical for the role, but it’s not tied to Behaviours, Success Profiles, or Strengths—they’ve told me these aren’t being assessed.

There are two other criteria mentioned in the person specification, which they’ll also ask questions on: one around effective communication and the other about organizational skills and managing priorities under pressure.

I’d love to hear any tips on preparing for the situational task or advice on tackling these criteria in an SEO-level interview. For the non-task questions, should I use the STAR method and align my answers to Behaviours like Communicating and Influencing or Delivering at Pace, since the criteria seem similar?

In total, the interview lasts 45 minutes. I’m assuming 5 minutes for intros, around 20–25 minutes for the task, and the remaining time for the two other questions. Does this sound reasonable?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Given the limited time available for the task, I was wondering if it’s more likely that I would need to provide a verbal summary or response, rather than writing something like a letter or briefing? Or could it still be that I am given 25 minutes to read and draft a written response, and then share it with the interviewers?
Thanks for any insights!
