Working over Christmas

Chronicallyknackered · 18/12/2024 19:05

I see so many posts about two weeks off at Christmas, how many people is this a reality for ? And how many people have to continue to work as usual ?
I work in a hospital, and feel fortunate that I don't work Christmas/ boxing day unlike clinical colleagues who have no choice. Our patients live with us 365days year, many without leave, so staff are needed as usual.
Family members have said they feel sorry for me working up until Christmas Eve, and after boxing day.
Is that not reality now that a lot of employers expect you to work over Christmas, not off to relax for a fortnight ?

I work in a care home, I've got Xmas eve night and Xmas day night off. Been a long time coming, although I finish Xmas eve morning back boxing day night.

RandomUsernameHere · 18/12/2024 19:10

I'm working until Friday, then only working the 27th next week, then off until 2nd Jan. I get the bank holidays off and am using annual leave for the rest. One person from my desk (four people) needs to be working on each working day, so we just agree it between us.

LittleRedRidingHoody · 18/12/2024 19:17

Depends on the employer.

I worked in retail for 8 years, even when I was in a Head Office role we were in stores on the 24th lobbing boxes of carrots out 😂

I now work in tech, and am taking 2 weeks. It's a bit of a false rumour in that I'm using annual leave (as is my team, and I believe most workplaces that have a shut down) ~ so it's not like we get all the time off for free! I do appreciate it far more now though after those 8 years of no/little time off.

AnOldCynic · 18/12/2024 19:18

Construction industries have two week shut down.

MindBodySoul · 18/12/2024 19:18

I work in a school so yes normal for me.
Break up this Friday and we go back on the 7th Jan

Bookaholic73 · 18/12/2024 19:21

Having worked in retail for 20 years, I’ve always worked Xmas Eve, Boxing Day, NYE & NYD.

This year I get 2 weeks off as I changed jobs in February. It’s bloody amazing.

BankHolidayReset · 18/12/2024 19:23

I'm working Christmas Eve night then off Christmas Day. Partner is working Christmas Day night. It's a Christmas tag team in our house.

braaaiiins · 18/12/2024 19:25

I worked in agriculture and tourism for most of my working life so i was lucky to get any time off during usual holiday periods as that's when we were busiest with one thing or another

Ilikewinter · 18/12/2024 19:26

I used to work in retail so never had xmas off, then changed jobs and booked off xmas week, and I was bored !!!

This year I'm just off the bank holidays and working half days on some others.

AmyFFismyhomegirl · 18/12/2024 19:26

I'm working Christmas eve and then the 27th. Office based. I think that's pretty normal. Most employers in my area don't shut down over Christmas, mores the pity.

Soccermumamir · 18/12/2024 19:27

Work in education. Officially break up tomorrow and then back the 6th January.

Bananaram · 18/12/2024 19:28

I'd love a job that shuts down for 2 weeks off over Christmas, unfortunately this is not my world and any additional time off is annual leave (that I do not have!)

geminiflanagan · 18/12/2024 19:28

I work at a university, so we are closed from Christmas eve until Mon 6th, with staff encouraged to take leave/wfh on the days at either end of the break so it is quiet fortnight

steeringwheelonfire · 18/12/2024 19:28

I finished tomorrow until the 6th Jan. I work in a school. Very stressful, very difficult but I love it. Particularly love this time of year with my family

BleachedJumper · 18/12/2024 19:30

I feel pretty lucky with my new job.

Charity sector, we get the three bank holiday days off, plus the 3 in between days of Boxing Day and New Year’s Day, and additionally as a well-being day they give Christmas Eve.

so working the 23rd, then back on the 2nd of January, and we don’t need to use any of our own annual leave for that, though quite a large percentage of staff will be using two days to get a full fortnight off, but working from home for those days doesn’t bother me at all.

bengalcat · 18/12/2024 19:31

NHS - am off Christmas Day - however I’m taking leave for a weeks skiing over the new year

Edinaandpatsyrule · 18/12/2024 19:31

Work in a PICU. Nights over Christmas but then a few days off over New Year so will be celebrating then!

DawnAnn · 18/12/2024 19:35

I work in higher education. We finish on Friday 20th and will go back on 6th Jan.

KateF · 18/12/2024 19:36

I work in a nursery. We close at 4pm on Christmas Eve and are closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day. Other than those it's work as usual.

slightlydistrac · 18/12/2024 19:36

I work for a business that supplies to manufacturing companies, and many factories shut down altogether over the Christmas/New year period so there's no point in us being open either. I finish on the 20th and go back 2nd Jan.

NearlyNewHip · 18/12/2024 19:37

Office closes after 23rd and reopens 2nd. We have to give them 3 days annual leave and they have gifted Xmas eve. But so busy that I'll prob be working from home and getting a day or two of the annual leave back. Would rather they didn't close the office and let people decide if they want to take the annual leave or not

stayathomer · 18/12/2024 19:37

When I worked in offices we always got two weeks off, labs you had to be in a few days over the two weeks but not too much. Now retail and … yeah it is what it is. Have my first Christmas Eve off though so that’s cool!

TotallyTwisted · 18/12/2024 19:39

I'm working, from home (as always) in a standard office job. I get the bank holidays off but prefer to use my annual leave at another time rather than to take 2 weeks off over Christmas.

tobee · 18/12/2024 19:39

When I worked in retail not only we not get 2 weeks off obviously, but were incredibly busy up until the last minute. Not unusual in retail. Also, because it was a touristy place, it was heaving just after Christmas as tourists were desperate to go places after the closing of stores. Plus they were always incredibly farty after Christmas food splurge 🤢🥴

Shinyandnew1 · 18/12/2024 19:40

Family members have said they feel sorry for me working up until Christmas Eve, and after boxing day.

Well, what sort of jobs do those family members have? If they are retired/work in a school, then that makes sense. Otherwise, most other people have a set number of days holiday so they can choose to take them when they want. If they take it off over Christmas, they won’t have it at another time.
