New job not turned out as expected - how to cope?

Been in the role just over a year. It was a newly created role and nothing has turned out the way it was sold to me. I do not have enough to do, but all my output is measured so I look like a poor performer. I have also just found out that we won’t be able to take on any new projects next year and I was hanging on for that.

I know I need to leave, but not finding it easy to find another role (senior and quite niche). I think being let go is also a possibility. How do I cope with all this? It’s starting to really affect me. Not sure what I am asking here but perhaps a vent and the hope of some reassurance it will all be OK?

Have you been looking, applying?

You need to find something else. In the meantime volunteer for everything even if you are not given more so you have more to do and you can say this in your reviews.

I've been in roles where I am swamped. I like being busy and feeling like I'm adding value. Having little to do doesn't sit well with me.

Yes have been through to the final round of interviews three times and missed out.

This is my problem, I like to be busy, needed and valued.

@Stuckbetweenarockandarock I found myself in a similar-ish situation. I left a toxic workplace to find myself in a situation a bit like you describe: In a company that was very different to what I was doing previously, they hired me to develop new projects specific to my set of skills. Except the projects never happened for varous complex reasons. After a year it became obvious I had no future there, but I stayed because I got pregnant. By the time I came back from maternity leave, things have gotten pretty bad, they could not get rid of me fast enough, and because I was working in a niche area, struggled to find a job elsewhere. That was the kick in the ass I needed to do a career change in a related area with much more job prospects. That was one year ago, since then, I started and finished a training, found an entry level job (I won't lie I hated that), and recently got a promotion.
Good luck

Could you not go the person above you and say you feel your not busy enough and ready to take on new challenges ?

Stuckbetweenarockandarock · 13/12/2024 18:05

Yes I have said to them time and time again about it, and also all our output is measured and tracked so they know. I have suggested things and tried to make my own work but I’m losing the motivation to do so.

have been approached about another role just hoping it comes to something!

@Liveafr that does sound remarkably similar. Like I had to get out of where I was but where I went to just hasn’t worked out.

I’m in a fairly similar situation! Started a job at the beginning of the year and is not what I thought it was going to be at all.

Ive just been offered a new job so I’m finally getting out. I’m a bit nervous to tell my boss though as I I don’t think he will be happy! I have to go through vetting etc so have to tell him now as he will have to be a reference on the vetting forms. I could be in for an awkward few months but will hopefully be worth it.

i would say keep looking, hopefully something will come up. Would you consider changing to a completely different role or is that not possible / something you would want?

Bearsinmotion · 16/12/2024 20:24

No advice but I am in the same situation! Paid more than my last role to do considerably less and while it was fun for a while I am bored and rapidly de-Skilling! Been in post 7 months, had one interview already and in the middle of another application process. I actually turned down another interview to take this job which I am now kicking myself for.

I am glad to hear that I am not the only one who is unsure of a new job and that others have been actively looking from around 5-6 mths.

i wanted out of my 2 previous part time roles which didn’t pay too good and after 6 mths of applying and a few interviews was offered a full time role.

the people I work with are all so lovely but I’m really not sure if the job is for me, although unsure what I want. Very small office and I’m used to larger companies.

i have only been there 2.5 mths and have started to research jobs as I think I need 4 days a week max (other life issues going on and that’s in another thread). Fully aware that it could take me months to find jobs to apply to and get interviews before even being offered, so using this job to put new skills on my cv.

hope that you all find positions to apply for and fingers crossed for the new year.
