New colleague very anti capitalist, anti banker

Hi

I have started a new position where a teacher/ my new colleague expressed strong political ( communist ) views on many occasions. ( My husband is a banker).

More concerning is that she was hostile and unkind which I would classify as bullying. She made accusations that I deleted some files although I haven’t, she disappeared out of my sight when walking me to a classroom where I was supposed to teach.I had no idea where I was supposed to go and after a few stressful moments I arrived but could not believe she would do that on purpose.

And finally she made a personal insult about my husband and expressed sympathy with aggressive communist activists who threw glass bottles on bankers in the media.
An antipathy against bankers is fine, most people are, but expressing these views in the staff room of a private school? Personal level insults? I am very concerned.

I understand that I should have started a conversation with my line manager but it understand that they have been best friends since a long time and it was pointed out to me that “he” would not help me.

However, it it my moral duty to report it as it I personally believe its unacceptable.

Would you go to the head of school?

I don’t want to make a formal complaint.
I have a 6 month contract and I am happy to leave then. But I feel that it is my moral obligation to report it. I feel the head is a very kind responsible woman and then its up to her of what to do.

Would would be your recommendation?

I'd chuckle that she is a capitalist herself if she works in a private school.

How do you know she is a communist? It’s quite unusual! Do you just mean left wing? Or did she bring a communist water bottle to school?

Alibababandthe40sheets · 08/12/2024 08:11

Is being a communist immoral?

YellowAsteroid · 08/12/2024 08:11

She’s allowed to have political views. Presumably you are very pro-bankers and capitalism. Those are political views.

Cosycover · 08/12/2024 08:12

A little more info would make this easier to understand.

Has she actually said she is a communist?

I am not a communist but I am very left wing and do not like capitalism. I would never work in a private school.

So I reckon she is at it.

In theory yes, but I too have moral beliefs and a strong belief in human kindness and respect particularly as an educaror. To me its unacceptable.

So your political beliefs are “moral” and acceptable, but hers aren’t? As an educator you don’t think very logically, nor do you sound particularly open-minded.

You would look very silly and bullying were you to “report” your colleague. It would look like immature playground behaviour.

KeebabSpider · 08/12/2024 08:26

It's not the the 1950s you know !

What moral duty? are you concerned she will be corrupting the minds of these young people?

If only.

But the fact is that children being brought up amongst greater wealth and privately educated are almost guaranteed to adopt your 'moral' opinions. I wouldn't lose any sleep if I were you.

You need to get on with your colleagues in general, and she is doing a good job of winding you up.

Just laugh off her stupid comments, point out that by teaching the children of affluent parents, she is supporting the capitalist system, and then ignore her.

EmmaMaria · 08/12/2024 09:47

I rather suspect that you don't know what a communist is.

Not English I hope.

The whole scenario sounds very odd to me.

Or history or politics

The OP seems to be a second language English speaker which would account for their posting style.

Still no clue what their DH does in banking as no-one uses the term banker any longer.
