I applied for my boss' job as he retires in the new year. I wasn't going to, but 2hrs before the deadline I very quickly put an application together and I found out yesterday I have an interview!
My scores weren't great due to the lack of effort but that suggests my competition also isn't that great. This is my best chance at moving upwards and it's rare an opportunity like this comes up. I'm the most experienced by far of those that have applied but I'm also the most overlooked.
There are 2 other competences I need to cover in the interview which I haven't even looked at yet so that's going to take a lot of work.
I'm aware of at least 3 others that also have an interview. One is a grade below me which wouldn't usually worry me but the last twice a manager has been put in place, the jobs went to someone 2 grades below the new job title. One is very competent and he'll come across great at interview but doesn't have huge experience in this job and the other has their name out everywhere and is well liked, but I honestly don't think she'd be good at the job. No idea if there are more candidates but they've only set aside 1 day for interviews.
My worry is that I'm unbelievably bad at interviews. I shake, I forget what I'm trying to say and I'm not a confident person. I know I can do the job though and am definitely the most qualified for it, but getting that across will be difficult for me.
I suppose I have to concentrate on the fact it's a good jump in salary and it will relieve some of my childcare issues as I won't have to travel often like I do now. I won't have autonomy over how I work though, as I do now and my DP's job does not work well around mine as he can't be flexible as it's emergency services so his shifts frequently run over time.
