A thread for people who are waiting to hear if they’ve been shortlisted 3

Continuing as we filled the second thread!

A space to fret, vent and generally get support for that horrible in-betweeny bit between applying and finding out if you’ve ticked all the boxes!

Me :) did about three applications this week. Am being more selective and spent ages on CV. Do think with it being Christmas that market is quiet and keep seeing the same jobs in my searches on different websites. But need to get out of my current workplace.

Usernamerequired123 · 05/12/2024 09:48

Place marking !!

Thanks for the thread slam , I was desperately searching...

tresleches · 05/12/2024 11:39

Thanks @slamfightbrightlight

My first interview rejection to report. I expected it while allowing myself to hope a bit, I'm just craving certainty in a way that makes my brain leap around a lot.

Feedback was purely scores, so not that helpful (though I can triangulate it with the Reddit Civil Service board that emphasises that internal applicants are trained in what to say and have extremely relevant examples). It's really difficult when you're applying for jobs involving major pay cuts and usually far less experience, and still get rejected. On we go...

Usernamerequired123 · 07/12/2024 13:59

I had a screening call more than 2 weeks ago. So emailed yesterday to check if they had any questions or updates for me.

The HR person immediately emailed back saying yes for the first round. It's a brilliant role for me. So I'm hopeful.

But when I went back with confirmation of my availability they have not sent me the invite/ email yet to confirm timing. Not a good show by the HR IMO.

My JSA coach has asked me to look at the LA and Civil service roles to get a job/ any job. So I have to do that too in the next few weeks. Never done that before so I'm completely clueless. Not even in my home country. If anyone has anything useful for me please share. TIA

slamfightbrightlight · 07/12/2024 15:07

Former LAer going back to an LA here, happy to help any way I can. But generally they still lean on competency type applications/interviews, so as long as you can write a supporting statement that ticks off the items on the person spec you’ve got a good shot at getting shortlisted

Hi all, I gave myself a few months off from job-hunting as every job I applied for had hundreds of applicants do no chance of even getting an interview.

Congrats to those who have secured jobs and solidarity to those still looking. Usernamerequired123 in the nicest possible way, I was hoping not to see you here - so sorry this is such an agonising time for you.

I started a course to get a qualification to evidence what I already do in Sept. It's been a useful distraction and it's definitely helped me feel more confident. Will complete in Feb, so gradually starting to look around again.

A recruiter contacted me via Linkin a couple of weeks ago. Had an interview that seemed to go well - they were talking about the second and third stage interview process etc and said they'd be in touch with the recruiter later on that day or the following.

Heard nothing since. I did drop a thanks and is there any feedback? message to the recruiter the following day.

I guess I just wait? I wish I hadn't let myself get re-sucked in tbh. I felt much better having a break from this self-doubt and angst.

Usernamerequired123 · 09/12/2024 14:01

@Trumpetoftheswan2 that made me smile. Thank you! All the best with your qualifications.
TBH Even I didn't think I'd be searching jobs for 9 months straight. I was told by so many people/ ex colleagues (even MN) that with extensive Big 4 experience I'll be selected in a second. But here I am.

I have been confirmed for an interview this Wednesday and after that I'm looking at a full on break till 4th January. No studies no jobs to apply for 3 weeks.

MêmePasPeur · 09/12/2024 14:38

Applied for a job that I really want. Heard nothing, went over interview dates so emailed to ask for clarification. They responded that they had a lot more applicants than expected and were taking longer to shortlist. That was nearly two weeks ago and my application is still being listed as "being processed" ...

Trumpetoftheswan2 · 09/12/2024 15:17

Best of luck for Wednesday Usernamerequired123. Everything crossed for you.

Meme that has happened to me a few times. I do think it's genuinely that they need to schedule more time to sift applications.

Hope you get an interview.

Trumpetoftheswan2 · 09/12/2024 17:58

How long does it usually take for recruiters to get back to you? Or do you expect to just be ghosted?

One interview and I'm already feeling sick with dread at going through rejection after rejection again. The two interviewers seemed so keen, talking about a second and third round nterview and how my experience aligned with what they were looking for and so on.

I've definitely known at the end of some interviews that it won't go any further, but this felt very different.

Usernamerequired123 · 09/12/2024 19:52

Is it independent recruiters or company recruiters (HRs) ?

I've had bad experience with HR but external ones are more talkative and would always keep me updated. Some times a couple of days late (due to sickness etc) but generally good with communication. We are their repeat customers so they are usually good at maintaining communication.

HR on the other hand .... IYKYK

I've also had some interviews talking about the next round extensively when in fact I was not called in for the next round. But doesn't mean same will happen to you.

Trumpetoftheswan2 · 10/12/2024 00:25

External - I'm open to work for recruiters on LinkedIn.

Trumpetoftheswan2 · 10/12/2024 13:12

Emailed the recruiter and I'm not through to the second round.

Again. Honestly at a loss about how to get a job.

RachelGreensHair · 10/12/2024 17:55

I've got an interview, it's for a role that's less than I'm on now, but it's an organisation I feel passionate about - and will get me out of where I am now.

For those of you looking for jobs in local government, there's a new website just launched recently I think by the LGA

Sorry for you @Trumpetoftheswan2

Tides will change in the new year.

Trumpetoftheswan2 · 11/12/2024 08:35

Best of luck today usernamerequired123.

Hope so re: new year.

dreamcatchlavender · 11/12/2024 08:42

I applied for a job 4 weeks ago, still waiting to see a rejected or selected message! It's painful isn't it

BadSkiingMum · 11/12/2024 16:01

Hello, just marking my place then I will go back and read the updates!

I had an in-person interview yesterday - my first for nearly seven years as they have all been online since 2020 - I quite enjoyed it but found the questions a bit relentless towards the end.

BadSkiingMum · 12/12/2024 11:28

Yes, handling rejection is a tough one isn’t it?

Repeated rejection can then affect the next application or interview, as you can start to feel that it’s all pointless…

BadSkiingMum · 12/12/2024 12:58

I noticed on the news this morning that they are talking about losing 10,000 jobs in the civil service and that the Comprehensive Spending Review is not due out until June.
Bad news for any sector that I might possibly work in!

Trumpetoftheswan2 · 12/12/2024 19:08

Yes, I'm not at all good at handling rejection. Strange really, as I'm very used to it. I have a huge file labelled 'Job hunting 2024' on my laptop and will be starting a new one in the new year.

I still feel a bit disorientated about the interview that I had last week. I don't know what happened between 'your second interview will take a bit longer to arrange as we'll need to coordinate diaries' to 'we're not progressing your application'.

No feedback from the recruiter.

roycroppersshopper · 12/12/2024 20:25

I reported on the last thread that I had got two second interviews.

Found out today that one was a rejection and one was an offer! Saved me having to make a decision, as they were quite different prospects. Am super happy, start in the new year. I finish my fixed term contract next Friday 20th so a few weeks off to relax before starting. It's walkable (15 mins or so) so no commuting which would cost £5k+

Am so relieved, it's been a long time coming!

How is everyone else getting on?

Trumpetoftheswan2 · 12/12/2024 22:44

Congratulations roycroppershopper - a lovely Christmas present for you.

slamfightbrightlight · 13/12/2024 02:59

Nice one Roy!

I am still going through background checks so haven’t been able to resign yet. However in the meantime my boss and several colleagues have announced their resignations! I’m dreading telling my team as really feels like the wheels are coming off the place, though sadly it was inevitable. It’s all helping to solidify that I’ve made the right decision to go at least.

Good luck to anyone who has applications pending over the next week, guess we’ll then have a lull until the new year.

I applied for my boss' job as he retires in the new year. I wasn't going to, but 2hrs before the deadline I very quickly put an application together and I found out yesterday I have an interview!

My scores weren't great due to the lack of effort but that suggests my competition also isn't that great. This is my best chance at moving upwards and it's rare an opportunity like this comes up. I'm the most experienced by far of those that have applied but I'm also the most overlooked.

There are 2 other competences I need to cover in the interview which I haven't even looked at yet so that's going to take a lot of work.

I'm aware of at least 3 others that also have an interview. One is a grade below me which wouldn't usually worry me but the last twice a manager has been put in place, the jobs went to someone 2 grades below the new job title. One is very competent and he'll come across great at interview but doesn't have huge experience in this job and the other has their name out everywhere and is well liked, but I honestly don't think she'd be good at the job. No idea if there are more candidates but they've only set aside 1 day for interviews.

My worry is that I'm unbelievably bad at interviews. I shake, I forget what I'm trying to say and I'm not a confident person. I know I can do the job though and am definitely the most qualified for it, but getting that across will be difficult for me.

I suppose I have to concentrate on the fact it's a good jump in salary and it will relieve some of my childcare issues as I won't have to travel often like I do now. I won't have autonomy over how I work though, as I do now and my DP's job does not work well around mine as he can't be flexible as it's emergency services so his shifts frequently run over time.
