Irritated by lack of salary information

I know this will have been done already but I am just venting at the practice of advertising rules without a salary. I know this is something that can be addressed with recruiters but the role I’m looking at has particularly annoyed me as it says nothing more on the ad than ‘competitive salary’ but then asks you on the initial application ‘are you happy with the pay range?’ as well as asking for an indicative salary expectation, all before you have access to a recruiter.

Glassdoor indicates that the salary range is probably about right for me but that’s not 100% reliable, and frankly I don’t want to sell myself 10k or so short for no good reason.

It’s such a dodgy practice on diversity grounds and it drives me round the twist.

I hate this. If I'm not desperate for a role, I skip applying for roles without a salary listed.

Can you reach out to any of the company recruiters on LinkedIn and ask?

Can't stand it. Saw a head office job at the Guardian the other day. No salary. Get bent!

I haven't needed to job-hunt for some years, but if I ever saw an ad with no salary, I would phone them up and ask.

Don't bother with companies like this. Just wastes everybody's time.
They are being secretive so others in the company don't know what each other are paid.
It's a way to keep salaries as low as possible

I find it so frustrating. The role I do has a fairly broad salary range, and I'm earning on the high end of that. Plus my work is very flexible and I value that. However my current project is ending so I'm casting about for something new and so many similar roles just don't give a salary, despite providing a list of pointless other benefits. I don't give a shit about having my birthday off, and I frankly don't trust any company that offers unlimited annual leave. I want to know if I'm going to be able to pay my mortgage and I shouldn't have to jump through hoops to find out.

I’ve made an inquiry although no recruiter is listed or any internal contact, so I had to do quite a bit of digging. I was mostly riled by the fact that the initial application form asks you to agree that you’re happy with the pay range without giving you a clue what it is! And also asks you to state salary expectation which is an invitation to underpay.

My instinct of course is to walk on by.
