I’m currently signed off sick and since I gave the note in almost 3 weeks ago I have heard nothing from my employer. I feel a bit weird/ sad about it. My note runs out tomorrow and has been extended for another 2 weeks so I will have to email them. Would you have expected them to contact me? I am getting anxious it means they don’t want me back.

Employers can't win really, if they contact people when off sick then you get the employee posting on here complaining about it. if they don't, the same thing happens!

After 3 weeks I wouldn't expect them to contact me, no, they have your sick note so are fully aware of the issue. It doesn't mean that they don't want you back. Concentrate on getting well try not to overthink this.

There was a thread the other day slating an employer for messaging someone who was signed off. Ime most leave you alone, a few reach out to check in and support and some are twats. Yours are respectfully giving you space to recover.

If they contact you when sick, it can be construed as harassing you to return.
Kindly OP you are reading too much into it

Why not phone? Just to say that your sick note has been extended, will be on its way.

I think it depends on the reason. If you need adjustments to help you back into work or you’re off for something that might become long-term, I’d expect an occupational health referral.

My employer would ask you to get in touch in week 3 if you feel able to discuss your return. If you’re off for longer there would be some more formal contact and meetings which is set out in a policy. Does your work have a policy about how to manage sickness? This will tell you what should have happened if anything.

I think it’s partly because when other people are off for similar reasons we have clubbed together and sent flowers etc. I haven’t had anything and not even a text to ask how I am. I know that makes me sound incredibly needy/ entitled. But it just feels like they don’t care. I am close to my line manager. I thought we were friends really.

Your line manager isn't your friend. She is your manager. You might be "friendly" but at the end of the day she has to look at it as she would with any other employee.

As an employer I have never contacted anyone who has been signed off. I have just let them recover and have the time away and then had a chat to see how things are when they have come back to the office and if there is anything we can help with. I think that's the norm these days.

As a supervisor I dont contact people when they're off sick as they are sick and recuperating/dealing with symptoms.

Its a tricky one as some people would take contact as harrassment and some would take no contact as you have and be offended by it.
