Social Work/Probation Service - career change at 43

My early career was in recruitment/HR projects and took me around the world and was great money. I then left the corporate world after my 2nd baby and worked for myself for 4 years with some success, but it isn't financially viable long term.

It took me 1 whole year of applying for jobs to get my current role, which is within a careers team at my local sixth form college. Yes, a great step back in to the world of work in many ways; term time only, part time, flexible etc. However, it isn't mentally stimulating enough and the pay makes me feel naseous as it is so low!

I feel I am at a stage of life where i need to earn good money (we want to move house) and seriously increase my pension and I want a career that is stimulating and I can see a career pathway.

My degree is in criminology and so I have always wanted to work in a related field as I am really passionate about social issues - I wanted to ask about those who have joined either the probation service or become a social worker and how tough it really is? Workload wise?

All previous posters asking about these careers, the responses always seem to be no way, don't do it!

I would love to hear from people who actually find these jobs rewarding? If so, do you work within specific sectors? Thanks.
