What job is ideal for the socially awkward?

I need to start planning my return to work now my baby is a year old. I left my job as I was bullied and discriminated against whilst pregnant. Now it’s time to find a job I feel really nervous and frantic. I don’t know what I want to do as a career, but definitely something new that I haven’t done before. I don’t have any qualifications so I haven’t a clue where to start. I’m very socially awkward and have ocd, anxiety and depression so I struggle with communication and socialising. It makes it difficult to find a job that works for me as you can’t avoid those things. Can anyone recommend a job I could look into please? I’m willing to study and do a course to get the job I want.

Do you like animals? What about something like pet grooming or kennel attending?

I wish people would stop suggesting this on threads like these - developers need to be able to collaborate and work with colleagues, it’s not just a solo job.

Bookkeeping...you can do do distance learning. You will need to get clients however I find you can do most interactions by email once you have clients

Following as I am looking for a change and am very introverted and quiet

I know someone that works for an online website as one of the online chat people. Does it from home and no interaction, he loves it as also hates social interaction.

When you say you don't have any qualifications what was the highest level that you achieved IE do you have GCSEs but no professional ones or starting from scratch?

Are you academic but missed the exams due to illness etc?

Do you have / Could you have any learning difficulties.

Roughly how much do you need to earn?

Socially awkward, OCD, depression and social anxiety - I'd also potentially look at autism in women as often it was diagnosed as a combo of MH issues but understanding in how it presents in women has more awareness now and you may find techniques used by autistic women useful whether you have it or not.

Cleaning. There are usually lone working cleaning roles available. Usually part time hours but great if you truly do hate interaction.

do you know what company does this please?

Maybe I would say this but... I don't think introversion and finding communication and socialising difficult necessarily means preventing yourself from either developing skills in those areas or from getting any job requiring human contact?

I see introverts as often very sensitive to distress in others, so you might find a job where you have more structured interactions, particularly 1:1, perhaps in a helping profession, suits you. I know someone who's a diagnostic radiographer, and her skill and understanding of people in pain is amazing. She gets really good quality Xray images plus CT scans etc and is very valued by her team.

I guess what I'm saying is that it's possible to get better at things you find difficult, and you may even find that by learning something consciously you're actually better at it than people who are 'naturally' supposed to be hot at it.

PermanentTemporary · 26/11/2024 12:51

(Sorry the point about my radiographer friend is that she's autistic).
