What to wear to a corporate Christmas do?

Hi everyone..

So I've never worked for a corporate company before.. we have a big Christmas do coming up that's a black tie dress code.

I've found a few dresses I like.. just wondered if I post them here if people can vote for most suitable?

I like the first attachment the most but feel it may be a bit inappropriate?

I'm 28 for reference

Would all be inappropriate/OTT in my sector although could get away with the silver one (unless you have large breasts)

titchy · 22/11/2024 22:03

Assuming it's a a sector like Finance or Law, fuck no all totally inappropriate. You want classy not cheap.

If you're in marketing or creative maybe ok. Though again you'd want out-there rather than cheap.

Is the corporation Stringfellows?

katmarie · 22/11/2024 22:09

Neither of those would be appropriate in my sector (software development for a specific industry). For context i have a work do next week with a dress code of formal, and I'm going in this:

Oh wow I'm completely clueless then.. I'm finding it really hard to find something elegant to wear that doesn't break the bank!

Anyone have any suggestions on what I can look for please?

Men come in tuxedos or a shirt and trousers and women tent to wear long or short sparkly dresses I've been told.

I've never been to a Christmas do, let alone a fancy (ish) one! May have to completely rethink..

I was thinking of my clutch bag, accessories, shoes having the sparkly element (but subtle) and maybe a plain dress but I just can't find anything elegant enough I guess

Yes the first one is inappropriate for a corporate do. Second one is also a bit much with the thigh split. Grey one is nice enough. Does depend on the type of business though and what you’re wanting to achieve. I’d keep looking!

Maybe this one is more suitable? X

That first one is the opposite of elegant.

DreadPirateRobots · 22/11/2024 22:16

The only one of those which is remotely appropriate is the grey one. No cutouts, no thigh-high splits, no see-thru lace, no aggressive cleavage.

Something like this from Silkfred would be suitable. You are aiming for classy and restrained, not sexy.

All very good points thank you!
Usually for work I'm just in black shirts and black trousers/skirts and shoes so don't go 'out my comfort zone'

I like that dress! That's elegant and definitely given me more idea on what to look for! When I searched 'elegant Christmas do dresses' nothing like this came up! Appreciate the help thank you x

The black dress you posted is a lot better, although it looks a little thin and cheap and like it would show any undies badly. (I can see the model's nipples quite clearly, for starters.) And not wearing a bra in a thin dress to a formal do is not a career-maker, not in the good way anyway.

Reminder to self mustn't look at silkfred Xmas dress when another posted recommends it.

Ended up buying myself a jumpsuit
