Its question for applicants Is there's a catch?

From the 3 sets of observations below, which patient would you not mobilise.

  1. HR 70, BP 110/89, Sats 96% on air (scale 1), RR 17, Temp 36.6 degrees
  2. HR 89, BP 165/90, Sats 90% on 2L O2 (scale 2), RR 19, Temp 36.9 degrees
  3. HR 95, BP 84/67, Sats 94% on 1L O2 (scale 1), RR 18, Temp 36.7 degree

Yes, but is there's a catch ? It's sounds too easy

Don't think there's a catch, you just need to take all observations into account

cindertoffeeapple · 22/11/2024 10:49

I’m guessing it’s easy if you know? But not everyone does. I don’t work in this field and have no idea of the right answer!

(Opened your thread thinking it was about psychotherapy)

No medical knowledge whatsoever, but I would say 2 based on heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen level with the amount of oxygen they’re on.

SelGar · 22/11/2024 11:19

2 as oxygen sats far too low. I'd also be wary of 3 when they stand up as BP low!

There's no catch, it's just making sure you are aware there are factors to take into consideration and not just cracking on and doing something because you were asked to and the patient's condition has changed.

If in doubt, the answer is always to check with qualified staff!

FlorencenotRatchet · 22/11/2024 11:29

I would not mobilise patient 3- very low Blood Pressure. Risk of falls when standing.

2 - scale 2 is to do with saturations for people with respiratory failure so their expected ranges are between 88-92 normally. I would be cautious about mobilising before checking what is their "usual" presentation in terms of oxygen therapy and shortness of breath on exertion.

AnnaMagnani · 22/11/2024 11:46

2 BP is too low.

3 is OK to mobilise as although their sats are low, they are using scale 2 which indicates this patient always has low sats.

Edited as phone autocorrected to the wrong numbers.

AnnaMagnani · 22/11/2024 15:44

Just like to say I edited that over as kept autocorrecting and it's still wrong!

3 is not safe.

2 is fine and normal for a lot of COPD patients.
