Would dreadlocks be widely acceptable for a 23 year old main entering mainstream work?

I am a mother of a 23 year old young man whom insists that dreadlocks are acceptable for mainstream work office.

I have tried to explain to my DS that he is shutting himself out of many work opportunities whom will have a dress code which he cannot dictate to.

I would appreciate very candid responses from all members of this forum.

Teacher here, my head has them, he's of Jamaican decent and really rocks the look with a pin stripe suit, very cool.
We also have a white art teacher with them too, he doesn't go the suit rout, ripped jeans and t shirts with a message type.
in neither case is it an issue, why should it be!

sometimesmovingforwards · 21/11/2024 20:52

Chances are that any place that takes issue with it, probably isn’t his tribe anyway. So doesn’t matter.

Werecat · 21/11/2024 20:52

My law firm wouldn’t care. Some would - but some firms still aren’t fond of women or people who wear brown shoes so…

Werecat · 21/11/2024 20:54

With the caveat that they need to look reasonably‘tidy’ of course.

Silvan · 21/11/2024 20:57

Dreadlocks are not culturally owned only by people with afro hair. They have been part of hippie and surfer culture for many years. In any case, OP, I think it's fine as long as they are well-kept and not smelly.

Purplecatshopaholic · 21/11/2024 20:59

My corporate environment wouldn’t care either - as long he is good at his job. His hair has nothing to do with his work performance so why on earth would it matter - thankfully times have changed..

If they are neat and well kept and culturally appropriate to him, fine. If a crusty hippie version on a white boy then no.

What absolute woke nonsense. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Fine where I work, even if not tied back neatly.

mugglewump · 22/11/2024 17:36

Dreadlocks on black hair completely acceptable when tied back neatly. Cultural misappropriation on any other kind of hair and only suited to cycle couriers.

... your damn right ; he's reading the responses and grinning from ear to ear! I'm of old school and would rather he had a nice clean cut about 3 mm from the scalp all over!

You want him to look like a psychopath?????

mitogoshigg · 22/11/2024 17:41

It wouldn't be an issue as long as he's otherwise clean, presentable and if long and substantial perhaps tied back neatly if needing to dress smartly.

mitogoshigg · 22/11/2024 17:46

@mugglewump

Dreadlocks were common to many cultural including the U.K. is thought Boudicca had them according to some academics

SemperIdem · 22/11/2024 18:03

Would be totally fine where I work, nobody would think twice.

I’m sure there are still workplaces which would take issue, but they outliers at this point I would say.

Rosecoffeecup · 22/11/2024 18:06

I'm at an IB and often see people with dreads

DazedAndConfused321 · 22/11/2024 18:22

Absolutely, he should know how to keep them neat and tidy and that's all you really need to be professional. No different to a woman brushing her hair so it's neat and tidy.

Unless of course he's fully white and shouldn't have locs, in which case he should shave his head and grow tf up

cstaff · 22/11/2024 18:32

About 20 years ago I worked with a white Irish blonde woman who got dreadlocks. Omg they looked insane. I'm presuming that your son doesn't have any of these traits.

Sethera · 21/11/2024 19:48

Wouldn't be an issue where I work - large, traditional corporate firm. As for any type of hair, depending on length, he might want to tie it up/back so it looks neat.

Yup.

Frozensnow · 22/11/2024 18:37

Fine in my workplace as long as you’re clean. My workplace also wouldn’t say you could only be a certain race to wear them- it would be fine whatever race you are as long as you’re presentable.

kaela100 · 22/11/2024 18:45

If they're well kept and clean (and wrapped if long) then I don't think any workplace would have a problem with them.

Bollocks. As long as they look tidy & don't smell they're fine, no matter what colour/culture someone is. They've moved on.

You can be as woke & snobby as you like, (even if it's a weird combination) it doesn't make you right.

Gonegurl · 22/11/2024 18:49

I grew my hair into dreads in the 90s, worked as a teacher with them too (tied back).
I wouldn't do it now, though I/we had no sense of it being cultural appropriation then - it was a part of the Seattle grunge scene/studenty vibe and I certainly didn't mean to cause anyone offence.

Mochudubh · 22/11/2024 18:51

If he's neat and clean, fine. If he looks like Swampy, not so much.

I've just Googled Swampy to remind myself and he actually sported a hybrid of dreads and what the OP would prefer.

Grow up????

jiggle on.
