(name change as previous posts could link me to my employer)
Short version: I (40 yo) am in a position where I think it’s wise to give up on my career and pivot to a new one. I am finding it impossible to make a decision about which direction to go in and I’m looking for advice/anecdotes from anyone who has done this in the past.
Long version: I am close to the end of my second (and final) mat leave and it seems fairly likely that I will be made redundant before I return to work. All above board as my employer is closing my department.
I have had a good career so far and have reached a fairly senior level in a highly competitive creative industry. Unfortunately the industry is going through a massive downturn due to several factors and the future is not looking rosy. Lots of companies are closing, downsizing, merging etc and it’s going to be a total bloodbath looking for a new job at a similar level.
I have been thinking for a while that it might be wise to cut my losses and try to pivot into a different industry/career but I’m finding it really hard to settle on something that seems realistic.
As a family, we can’t really afford for me to take a massive pay cut. DH and I have always earned roughly the same.
I was just hoping to hear some of your stories if you’ve been in the same boat. How did you make this decision? What direction did you go in? Did it work out?
Thanks in advance!
