How can I find a quick remote/working from home job, fairly desperate.

We are a family of 5 and for one reason or the other are really struggling this Christmas.
DH works full time and I part time however one of our DC is going through a Autism referral at the moment, doesn’t cope at school and is home Ed so me taking any more hours away from home is so tricky.

I work for a charity just now, centre/office based but working from home has always appealed to me and even more so just now with DD.

I just don’t know where to start, if I look on places like Indeed/Charity jobs etc the positions for people much more qualified than I am but equally when I put remote work into Google it brings up lots of companies claiming I can work from home from today, no experience needed, earn £££ but it all just feels a bit spammy…

Im happy to do whatever it takes but also don’t want to put a month in and realise I haven’t made any thing because the wage is based on just commission.

Does anyone have any advice, or know where I can start or maybe vouch for a company?

I know Christmas isn’t just about the presents and money but the pressure of the children’s (rightly so) expectations and excitement of all the fun and magical things that we normally get up to over Christmas is really weighing down on both of us and starting to take its toll.

Legit WFH jobs are hard to come by and between interview dates, offers and onboarding practices its probably impossible you’d be starting anything before next year.

How would WFH work if you have a child at home needing home ed?

Between now and Xmas, can you start selling stuff on Vinted or Facebook marketplace?

Amiracleatchristmas · 18/11/2024 10:58

@loropianalover DD is a teenager and is self sufficient work wise however does need someone around to keep her motivated and focused and in times of panic safe.

Working from home is the better option of nof being there at all!

Being totally honest no legit WFH jobs are going to be available to apply, interview, hire, start & then get paid before Christmas now.

Sky & AA do have WFH jobs so may be worth a look there, however they are call centre jobs with very tight on times, you’re allocated 15 mins break, 30 mins lunch, and then a set amount of “personal time” around 12 mins a day which is for toilet breaks, you’re on the phone constantly back to back so you’d be no use to your child if she needed you unless it so happened to be in those set times.

If you have a DC at home that you need to keep motivated/focused, and safe in times of panic, it’s going to be hard to manage a WFH role…. you will probably be customer service on the phone dealing with issues. You’ll be timed down to the minute with everything you do.

Could you be with DC during school hours and work an evening job after DH gets home?

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 18/11/2024 11:17

You could work in a supermarket for 4 hours an evening for 2 or 3 evenings a week something like 8pm - midnight. or if your dh is def home in time you could do 6pm - 10pm.
Most supermarkets will require weekends in some form i.e. every other weekend or every Sat or every Sunday.

but it's so near to Christmas I doubt you would actually receive much in wages i.e. M&S pay on the 10th of each month with a cut off date for payroll of by the end of the month ? and as you haven't started you wouldn't get paid til Jan.
Somewhere like ASDA is every 4 weeks and their next pay day is 29th so I suspect the cut off date for payroll is very soon if not happened already.
and of course Christmas is over by the time they pay again on 27th Dec.

I thought wfh actually meant working and not home educating your child.

Amiracleatchristmas · 18/11/2024 11:20

With all respect to the previous posters I have asked for advice on WFH roles not how I manage my daughter day to day.

It looks like I might be too late to apply for anything ahead of Christmas online and as I thought the “start/earn today, no experience needed jobs” are as they sound, too good to be true.

Back to the drawing board. I have lots to sell on FB MP but never seem to get any interest on it, I think possibly location as we are quite rural.

Do you have any skills you could freelance? Writing, graphic design - things like that?

Amiracleatchristmas · 18/11/2024 11:29

@Eraserbread I enjoy writing and taking pictures but I unfortunately don’t have any professional or qualifications.

You don't necessarily need them to start freelance writing, so might be worth a try? Sites like Fiverr, Upwork and PeoplePerHour are a good source.

mynameiscalypso · 18/11/2024 11:45

This is probably a stupid question because I'm sure you've thought of it already but could you do your current job from home and put in a flexible working request for this?

With all due respect those posters have told you - genuine work from home jobs are few and far between, have almost no flexibility and will not tolerate you "managing your daughter" at all. Working from home is no different from working in a workplace. These jobs are not the somewhat more flexible "ordinary job that you can work from home at times" sort. They are hard grift, your pereformance mand presence are monitored and many of them are on thge lookout for people who are doing other things whilst also working. There's a lot of mythology about working from home, and the reality is very different.

colinthedogfromaccounts · 18/11/2024 12:05

What are your skills?

I run a company that is 100% remote. We offer flexible, fully remote working conditions. We don't care when or how you do your work as long as it is completed within agreed and reasonable timeframes.

Only mentioning this as I know a number of other companies who do not routinely monitor remote employees. We work on output and timeliness, not on bums on seats. So it is possible to work for a remote first company and have flexible working conditions.

I would suggest that you upskill in one of the following:

CSS/HTML
CRM Configuration (Hubspot & Salesforce)
ECommerce (Shopify)

These skills are in high demand and are usually remote first.

Right but that’s up to me to manage and work out.

The title of my post wasn’t how do i work from home round my child it was a question about the likely hood of me finding a remote job before Christmas the two things are completely different..

As a side note, you seen very angry @EmmaMaria i hope you’re ok.

Unfortunately not, my role is family based so mostly in centres and then some admin attached to it.

@EmmaMaria no need to be an arse is there!

Wrinkleyoldbag · 18/11/2024 12:17

Lots of WFH admin types roles are currently available with my local council, the sort of thing that used to be in an office before Covid are now from home.
Check your council for vacancies, unlikely to start before Xmas but for longer term might suit you better.

Amiracleatchristmas · 18/11/2024 12:19

@Wrinkleyoldbag thank you, I’m really worried that I wouldn’t have anything to offer but that’s just my lack of confidence, I’ll definitely take a look.

I agree - WFH isn't to replace childcare. And fully remote jobs are hard to find unless you have a specialist skill set, which you may do.

And those are exactly the jobs that I was talking about. People may not like the reality of WFH jobs now, but where I worked until a month ago people were getting wfh jobs and routinely being dismissed after being caught being "flexible". It is not being angry or arsey - it is about what the real world looks like now. Too many people taking the piss with home working has caused a massive backlash. If you only want to hear what you want to hear, it's probably best not asking people!

Overthebow · 18/11/2024 12:28

Have you looked at Prolific to get a bit of extra money in for Christmas? It’s surveys but actually decent ones that pay well. It’s fairly easy to make an extra £50-£100 a month on there and more if you have more time to spare.

Amiracleatchristmas · 18/11/2024 12:41

@EmmaMaria You’re not really getting it are you?!

I’m interested in hearing what I asked about..

Is there a chance of getting a WFH job ahead of Christmas and if so can anyone suggest any options of companies.

Your making unwanted assumptions on my circumstances which I didn’t ask for and you know anything about.

Do you do that to people in RL?

Thank you, I do use prolific but maybe not as much as I could.
