Does claiming expenses on UC impact tax returns?

Hi all,

Me and my partner have been on UC short term whilst I have been on maternity. He is self employed and has been declaring his expenses on our UC every month.

My question is, when it comes to April tax returns, is he able to claim for his business expenses as normal? Or does what he has put through UC mean he can't claim them on tax return?

Thank you in advance for any advice

I don’t know anything about the rules for UC, but the reason to claim expenses against your tax return is so you’re not taxed on money you had to spend on business expenses ie it wasn’t profit that you kept. I don’t see why UC would change that.

Not 100% sure, but if claiming expenses on UC means you are getting more money then you probably should include them on the tax return as you will be then “paid” twice for them, via both UC and the deduction from your income for the purposes of tax.
