Clock in system

Hi we have an electronic clock in system that if your within half an hour of your start time or over it automatically reverts back to your set shift pattern. For example if you as scheduled for the 8am to 8pm shift but you work to 20:29 then it reverts back to 8pm and you only get paid until 8pm. I work in a place we're things happen and can't be passed to the next shift so you have to deal with it. If it goes over the half hour it has to be manually approved by a manager. Is this legal given that you have been there and done the work. It's doesn't put me under NMW. It's more the principle.

Can you raise this with management.
Are you in a union ?

This happens all the time in a lot of industries. Notably retail. Yes it's legal, or no on one would ever do unpaid overtime. Notwithstanding min wage issue

Mrsmch123 · 13/11/2024 22:25

surely your not just expected to do overtime without being paid. I'm not a volunteer. If my contract states 48 hours then anything after that is overtime and I should be paid for my time?

Check your contract. There may be an unpaid overtime clause. You did check it before you signed it I assume.

I worked in a call centre and we only got paid if it went over 15 mins. It was in our contract, but we let people take the time back. In email if you get stuck with a customer you can't just leave them. It's expected to be flexible occasionally

It was 10 years ago I signed it and they never had this system when I first started🤷🏻‍♀️

I worked for a company that done this, back to the to the nearest 15 mins if you were late. Not paying you for the next 15 if you left late.

They paid what ever you wrote on your timesheet.

What happens if you leave at 8:31? Does it round up to the next hour?

its reverts back and you only get paid to 8pm even tho you have been there an extra half hour.

Sorry I'm talking rubbish. A manager has to manually approve the timesheet. Sometimes they pay you but other times they put it back to your set set shift time. So you get paid until 8pm only.

That doesn't seem fair - 'sometimes they pay you'.
There needs to be consistency; you either get paid or you don't (or you build up hours for flexibility or whatever). Isn't there a policy document? I'd speak to HR and find out.

I used to work for a company who wouldn't pay you for the first half hour but, if you went over the half hour, you'd get paid the full hour. That felt fair as it evened out over time.

Mrsmch123 · 14/11/2024 07:43

Yeh if it evened out that would seem fairer. I will check the policy when I'm next in.

I can just imagine everyone finding extra tasks to do at 8.25 or so to get it over thd half hour.
