Salary offer & Benefits worth the risk

Hello, desperately seeking some advice on what to do in relation to a job offer.

Without going into too much detail about my current role I'm earning 48k per annum inclusive of a vehicle allowance, the jobs good, I generally enjoy my work and im well respected memeber of the team, I get on well with my colleagues, working hours are good I also have a lot of flexibility around when I work within reason which is handy with a young family.

New job offer is a similar role but arguably a step up professionally working for a bigger company, it's a hybrid role with home working and occasional overnight stays as the role is a national.

I've been offered a 50k basic salary plus a company car, the role also includes up to a 10% annual bonus based on performance.

They seem reluctant to negotiate on salary, financially and with the car its obviosuly a better package but I can't decide if it's enough to take on the risks associated with starting a new role.

What's the general consensus, do people think it's a good enough offer to take the risk or would I be better off staying put?

Oooh tricky one..
What kind of vibe did you get at the interview?
Did you like them?

What about pension?

wobytide · 08/11/2024 00:09

What's the actual salary difference excluding the car allowance.

Flexibility with young kids is worth a lot if the alternative is paying for childcare. If it's giving up a standard of life for maybe 10% extra in your pocket probably not worth it

Discovery1989 · 08/11/2024 06:04

Thanks everyone, got a good vibe during the interview process, I was recommended for the role by a former colleague who now works for this company..

Pension contributions are the same.

Actual salary difference would be 4.8k potentially 10k with the bonus.

My current vehicle likely needs replacing in the next few years so cashing in now on that and getting the company car is appealing.

Personally I wouldn’t move jobs for 4.8k, say bonus never comes through so you can’t count that. I would move for better prospects, work life balance and excitement, irrespective of money x
If I were you, I would ask for another 5k on top or say you cannot afford to work there

LifeD1lemma · 08/11/2024 06:23

It doesn’t sound like enough of an uplift to me. Remember that you lose employment rights when you move somewhere new (eg can’t claim unfair dismissal until you’ve been there 2 years), and you probably won’t be eligible for stuff like enhanced mat leave (maybe not relevant to you but there may be other similar benefits).

PenGold · 08/11/2024 06:24

I don’t think that package offer is worth the risk of changing jobs in your circumstances.

I agree with the pp who suggested trying to negotiate an extra £5k or walking away and staying alert for other opportunities.

pinkdelight · 08/11/2024 06:39

How long have you had current job and do you actually want to leave it? It sounds like you didn't seek this opportunity and the benefits aren't significantly better. If you're generally happy in your job and not stagnating then I wouldn't risk the good set up for an unknown. It's a small bonus and never guaranteed and they could want more than their moneys worth from you. Also you always have to show up more when starting a new job and it's stressful getting to know the new systems and people. It doesn't sound worth it in this situation.

fdwthuj · 08/11/2024 06:43

If it's principally WFH why have they offered a company car. I'd worry that the "occasional" overnight trips will be more frequent than you expect.

Do you have rock solid childcare for when you are working away?

AuntieJoyce · 08/11/2024 06:44

I think you’re looking at it as a short-term financial situation rather than a long-term prospect. What are the salary and promotion prospects longer term. How does your colleagues already there find the working environment and progression? (Assuming that they’re not getting a referral bonus).

That said, I would definitely be negotiating as much as I could at this point because that’s where you have the strongest bargaining power.

BoxOfCats · 08/11/2024 06:45

If they won't move on salary would they give you an extra week of paid leave? When I was with my ex he asked for that when a potential employer wouldn't move on salary package and they said yes.

FloordrobeIsGoingToGetME · 08/11/2024 06:46

What led you to apply for the new role? Is it appealing to you?

It's not a huge difference in package.

For me, financially it would be two things:

1 - Company cars attract a large tax implication so you need to factor that in to you figures if you haven't already.

2 - the bonus is always unreliable so treat that as a possible, not a definite

Package-wise, they don't seem to be trying their hardest to snare you, which would make me think hard about taking it.

Discovery1989 · 08/11/2024 07:02

Thanks all, and very much how I feel about the situation, had they offered a bit more say 55k I wouldn't question it and take the risk..

It just seems like a big change potential impact on work life balance for a relatively small increase in pay..

They are however considered the best in my particular sector so longterm they are probably the better company to work for.

I'm going to go back to them with a salary demand and see how it goes
