Advice please, Mumsnetters. Almost a year ago I took a secondment to broaden my skillset, with a view to progression. It’s been a hard slog - I’ve often felt out of my depth and there have been a lot of other factors (lack of line manager, conflicting steers, leadership changes) which have added to the challenge. Whilst there have been moments where I’ve felt like I’ve been finding my stride, there have been others, especially in last few weeks, where I feel like I’ve been doing a shit job - and that others think so too. Do I throw in the towel and go back to my old role (which would obviously feel like a backward step) or persevere? If the latter, any tips on how? TIA. Feeling a bit bruised and delicate.

I think once you've got the ick with a job, it's hard to come back from.
Don't look at returning to your old role as a backwards step, you tried the secondment, it just didn't work out.

Can you apply for another job instead?

Is this public sector? Half the people never returned to their original job post-secondment, even if the secondment was cut short for whatever reason.

Thanks both. Yes, I can apply for other jobs internally. That may be the answer.
