I have two. The one is listed which mentioned in a post dated today (4th Nov 21:28) https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/work/5183127-job-hunters-lounge?page=5&reply=139560613

The other one was between the vacation between 1st and 2nd years of uni. Went to a job agency, registered one day. Later on that day, got a call asking would I like to do this job (I cannot remember the job title) starting tomorrow. I went to the place which is in an industrial estate. Went there and all it was a cumbersome fiddly job. I had to fold this bit of cardboard and stick it on a certain place on a thick piece of paper. which created a pocket. In the pocket, I had to insert a free sample of laundry liquid and a money off coupon for the said product. The pocket had to be precise folding otherwise the sample and coupon wouldn't fit. | did 1.5 hours of this awful task which my fingers were covered in papercuts. We went off for morning break. I didn't return after break. I was back on the bus into the city centre to go home.

I had the last laugh as the agency paid me for 2 days (15 hours) for this!

I was forced to apply for care work by UC afrer telling them due to my sensory issue and ASD related issues I can’t do that. I had one day training and walked out as what they were expecting me to do I literally cannot do and I can’t drive either so it would have made me ill as I have an aversion to public transport plus I can’t speak most days as have situational mutism. It was awful and they were going to sanction me. Luckily I am now getting carers allowance for my dd so they are off my back. I can’t believe they are forcing people to do these jobs that really need to want to do so you can offer the level of care the clients deserve

Job as a chalet hostess. Was expected to make welcome cake, lunch and dinner for wealthy families.....

The boss gave me a bleach stained T-shirt to wear.

I just walked out

I went for a "marketing" job while on summer break at Uni
Got to the fancy office block and lots of young trendy people from the company were gathering for a meeting in the lobby, I thought, this looks good! Got taken to a small office and asked to read and remember information from a text. Small test given by the "manager" on ability to recall said information. You're perfect for us says he... Then proceeded to tell me that I'll be going to a supermarket tomorrow to sell Talk Talk to people trying to do their shopping. I noped RIGHT out of there. Fucking marketing.

I was shadowing a person doing door to door selling in a rough estate of a town. We got invited into a house and it was crawling with flies. Once we'd finished that house I told her I couldn't do this job and walked away.

Insurance sales. First week was training. I was back home by lunchtime on the first day. It was not for me.

MidnightBlossom · 05/11/2024 21:57

Care home. Years and years ago now. Didn't even make it halfway through my first shift. Awful place. I've been a carer since and always used to think back to that first experience to help me try and be everything that place was not.

Macdonald's in the 90s. Part time around my DH shifts. First day all the younger staff were effing and blinding on the front counter. I raised it with the supervisor who didn't care. I told him that kids come in the place and he was a disgrace and walked out.

Telesales. It involved sitting in a tiny office full of people smoking with a page torn out of the phone book and calling people telling them they’d won a holiday in a prize draw but they had to attend a presentation to claim it.

I shadowed/ listened in to an existing employee then we were given a break before I was meant to call. I walked out & didn’t go back. I’ve since worked in genuine telesales but no way could I scam people.

Sports Direct in the 90s.
About £1.75 an hour and had buy your vile uniform. I left during the first day training.

Spagettifunctional · 05/11/2024 22:05

I had a job picking mushrooms - left after about an hour

another time got offered hotel cleaning work for 1.80 and hour so didn’t take it

another time worked in a nursing home in a rough part of town and while I put a Resident to bed, rough youths broke in and stole all of our bags from the staff room during night duty so I left that morning at 8 and never returned. Took out the yellow pages 😂 rang and got another nursing home in a nicer part of town (uni job)

Office job selling windows, I lasted 3 hours and never went back. Was a load of "kids" forcing the elderly to buy new windows, it was horrible. Also a beauty salon job, the owner was vile, I think it was day 3 and I'd had enough of her attitude so I went for lunch and never went back!

DogsandFlowers · 06/11/2024 04:53

Wimpy in the 90s!! Had to wear the MOST embarrassing uniform ever with a stupid red hat and we were meant to memorise all the menu codes. The owners were awful bullies and used to rip me a new one for getting an order wrong. I walked our one day and never went back for my next shift ( sound advice from my dad)
Although they did ring my landline about two weeks later demanding I bring my vile uniform back, now that was awkward 🤣 I don't know why I even bothered to do that tbh what were they going to do take me to the small claims for a shitty ugly uniform? The big sleazy greaseball snatched it off me and I flounced out.
Bender in a bum anyone?!!

DogsandFlowers · 06/11/2024 04:53

Bun! Bender in a bun!

Farmgoose · 06/11/2024 05:47

Wimpy in the 90s too! Student job. I worked like a dog non stop for the first half of the shift on the fryer with no break as short staffed. Very hot. I was told a meal was included for my break. It has to be from a list of limited options. Fine.

I chose a basic burger, no fries (which I could have had) and a Diet Coke. Served myself the drink from the machine with no ice. The manager took me aside and told me off for not taking any ice and ‘filling up your cup with more drink’. Post mix from a tap FFS!

I just mumbled sorry I was thirsty and I didn’t know. I did finish the shift then left the uniform and never went back.

Door to door selling back in 1985. I was selling steam cleaning. I was 18 years old and at uni. I arrived at this big house. A young guy opened the door. Invited me in. We got pissed up on his parents drinks cabinet and that was the end of that job. I can't even recall how I returned the equipment!

catin8oots · 06/11/2024 06:57

Blackcurrant picking as a student. 30p a punnet. Yes blackCURRENTS. Do you know how small those fiddly fuckers are? Left after a couple of hours and the stupid bitch wouldn't pay us for what we had done
