Discreet Job Search

Briefly I have been unhappy in my job for some time now but I have persevered, however, this coupled with the recent discovery that the company I work for is now having money troubles has prompted me to start looking elsewhere. Although I have registered with a couple of local agencies with discretion assured I feel I need better exposure but I am reluctant to use job boards I case I am discovered by my current employer.

I'm getting rather anxious about my situation now so although I'm tempted to take a chance and 'put myself out there' I fear my current employer will discover my search.

Has anyone been in my situation ? And how did you cope with it ? Many thanks.

Well you can definitely search for your next job without your employer knowing, yes.

Look for the places where your type of job/ role is advertised, whether that's specialist vacancy websites, indeed, local or national newspapers. Or vacancies pages on the websites of key employers.

(for instance in my field there is the charityjob website)

Pick some to apply for where you have a chance, send application. You can either write "references on request" on CV or write please dont contact Referees without permission. In most cases employers won't contact referees unless you are actually being offered the job, ie post interview and/or post job offer subject to references.

When you are offered an interview you may need to use annual leave. But you don't need to tell your employer that you have an interview.

If you are offered a job then you finally need to tell your employer and give notice.

It takes time but it will be worth it! I made myself make 1 application per week while working in my previous job. I had a few unsuccessful interviews and then finally success.

I wouldn’t upload your CV to job boards like Indeed if your employer uses them.

Are you on Linked In? The Open To Work flag can be seen by recruiters at your own company if they use it, so be careful with that.

Could you create an a account in a false name just for looking, and only register in your own name if something comes up you definitely want to apply for?
