Job start date pending pre employment checks

Hi all,

I have been offered a new job and the start date is next week at a GP practice. I have received an offer letter which is subject to DBS and pre employment checks. I had a major surgery at the start of year and was off for 2 months because of the waiting time on NHS. I was not asked this question during interview, otherwise I would have discussed with the panel about it. I have given my line manager, who is on holiday and a colleague name as reference. He told me that the reference form has a question about sickness days in the past 3 years. This is my first sickness in the past 4 years. I work part time and free during the day, when kids are at school . The new employer has offered me to work a particular day in a week for training, until I serve the notice period. I am just worried that the offer might get withdrawn, if they are not happy with my sickness record. Should i still go for the induction on monday or wait for the checks to comeback. I haven't resigned yet.

Thanks,
Neha

I think you will be alright, but maybe email today to check what time they're expecting you for induction on Monday?

It's very unlikely that the offer of employment would be withdrawn. It's standard practice in NHS to ask for sickness absence record as part of the reference. Usually the most that would come of a situation like yours is they would ring you to find out a bit more about what the absence was related to and check if it's an ongoing issue which is still affecting you.

I'm sure it will be fine.
Congratulations on the new job

You’ll be fine with one period of actual illness that was resolved with treatment and you returned to work. As an nhs recruiting manager I’d not bat an eyelid other than to ask if you needed anything from occupational health to support (ie if you had an op on your wrist would you like a wrist support for the desk when typing etc).
id only be concerned if there were multiple random days, or weeks off with no obvious issue or evidence you’d attempted to improve/resolve it. Ie random days for random reasons I’d be more concerned about than a period 2 years ago where you were off for a couple of weeks here and there with depression but you’ve had councelling/on anti depressants etc I’d be fine with.

generally you’ll be fine xxx

I have emailed the new employer to check the timing.

This was just one off sickness. Hopefully they shouldn't have any problem, as i have always taken my work with full dedication.

Thank you all for your advice. It's given me so much relief to share and get some help here. I will wait for them to get back to me for the start time on Monday. I will still continue to work at my current job and only resign when all the checks are completed😊

Go to the induction on Monday. Ask your referee to state '1 period if absence for x working days in 4 years. Reason: surgery/recovery'

That should cover it.

Thank you. I have spoken to the referee and he said he will speak to the HR and get back to me. The new employer has come back to me and they said I can come for the induction on Monday and they have received my DBS. Is it common to join before pre employment checks, as my employment is subject to DBS and reference checks.
