Changing career / retraining in 50s

Anyone done this? I've reached the point where my long term role ended and I have a new one but am bored to death. I need to earn.

I have a decent clutch of of levels, secretarial qualifications and 30+ years experience as a corporate executive assistant.

I'm feeling a little past my sell by date and feel the need for a change but have no idea what I could do, or retrain as!

What are you passionate about? You could retrain as anything you want - nursing?

PermanentTemporary · 30/10/2024 07:35

In my 50s I have to say I'd think more about changing jobs or sector than actual retraining as such. I did retrain in my late 30s/early 40s but wouldn't completely change now. That's only my view though.

Have you talked to your manager about taking more challenges on?

Have you worked out what the absolute minimum you can get away with earning is?

MI5. Not even joking.

@CharlotteStreetW1 How does one access Microsoft job availability list?

isthereaway · 30/10/2024 07:54

'Microsoft' ? Stupid autocorrect! Sb: MI5.

Interesting idea but nothing suitable on the available jobs and many are London based, or in places nowhere near me!

I could have written this exact post myself!!
I'm having to come to terms with the fact that my job is being taken over by AI.
I'm currently applying for jobs as a corporate executive assistant. There are some remote roles available which would really suit me.
I'm 50, and hoping that my age won't work against me too much!

@LionAndEmperor13 are you experienced as an EA? Its not as easy a job as you might think.

Yes, I worked as bilingual EA in investment banking for many years when I lived in London. Sadly there aren't any investment banks where I currently live, so my only option is remote (which I prefer anyway). It's definitely not a job for the faint-hearted but the salary can be extremely high - I've seen some advertised recently for £100k plus.
