Job interview - no news

I had a job interview last Monday. The interviewer said that they would contact me by Wednesday or Thursday of last week to let me know the outcome.

It's now Monday evening, so a week after the interview, and I haven't heard anything.

I emailed HR today to see if they had any news. No answer! I then sent an email to the person who interviewed me. Also no answer! The job is in the company I already work in, so I know all the people involved. (I'm off on leave this week so can't speak to anyone in person).

I'm thinking that I didn't get the job, that they've offered it to somebody else and won't get back to me until that person has accepted.

What are people's thoughts?

Any of the following:

They are hopeless at managing the timescales and/or the availability of key decision-makers or

  • You are the second/reserve choice (ie, they reject all the others bar the person who they offer and keep one person in reserve... although usually when you're second choice, you get a "holding email" that sort of says expect a delay)
  • They've lost the budget or otherwise decided not to recruit or
  • They've completely forgotten about you / are terrible at admin

Unless it is Civil Service - they often take ages by default.

Good luck and fingers crossed for you

It's half term. They might not have sufficient links in the chain working to finalise a decision, and get an offer out.

It’s possible they found a more suitable candidate and didn’t inform you, but that doesn’t mean you’re not exceptional. I think you can continue looking for other jobs that are a better fit for you.

It's half term. I'd assume someone who needs to sign off on decisions is on leave. Also, IME, every employer everywhere is over optimistic about how long it will take them to reach a decision (I've just accepted a new job.)

Hi all,

A quick update. After two weeks, I got this message:

"After careful consideration, we have decided to put the hiring process for this role on hold to reevaluate the criteria and requirements. As a result, we will not be moving forward with your application at this time".

Does that mean that all the candidates interviewed were rubbish? I've requested feedback and have a meeting with the person who interviewed me next week.

I'm very annoyed as I spent a lot of time preparing. Also slightly embarrassed at my failure as the role is in my current workplace... And annoyed at their slow and rubbish email to me with the interview outcome.

AIBU?

They may not have found a person with all skills they were looking for.
They may have decided they need to make some costs savings, and this salary will be part of that.
They may be able to cover the cover be restructuring existing workloads/structures.
They may not need to do that particular work anymore.

Or another reason!

Asking for feedback is a very positive thing to do, allows you to know how close to the mark you were, and lets them know that you are keen to move up.
