Any driving instructors around?

I'm seriously considering training to become a driving instructor.
To begin with, I'd like to do it part time alongside my current job (teaching) however I'm a bit concerned about it fitting round the school runs.

My DH works long hours, often away so it's up to me to do the school runs most of the week. There is good wrap around care available of course if I need it but I don't want to rely on it too much.
I'm also concerned about the running costs of buying a car for the job, and how many hours I'd need to do to make it worthwhile.

My DH isn't too keen on me working evenings and weekends either.

Are there any driving instructors on here with young children who could share their experience?

Thanks

I think that while there's such a shortage you can essentially pick whatever hours you want. I'm friendly with a few instructors. One doesn't do evenings or weekends and only does afternoons a couple of days a week. The other one fits it around his clubs and activities.
You would be massively limiting your earning potential by not doing school run time, evenings or weekends though as that rules out many 16-18yr olds

@POTC I know. It's annoying really. My DH wants me to do something within school hours but really that limits me to 9;30-2:30, and not many jobs that would fit that. If I went back teaching full time (which I wouldn't want to), I wouldn't be able to do any of the school runs.

Who will look after your children if you work evenings & weekends?

Hmmm Is your DH so controlling in other ways? Is he genuinely worried for your safety & your inability to adult, or does he just like the little wifey in her box.

how about tutoring instead??

@AutumnLeaves24 tutoring is even worse for working evenings and weekends!

Yes, but you're not leaving the house, which is what I assumed his issue was and you don't need childcare, given the ages of yours!!

Ah, the tutoring jobs I've been looking at involve travelling to students' houses, as I teach primary level.
Online teaching would be good. Will make some enquiries.

I was thinking about becoming driving instructor and I am following.
How long does it take to train up to do it and how much does it cost?

@HohohoGreenGiant

Several friends have had success with online tutoring for primary age children.

Any of them that tried 'jobs' through Agencies gave that up & all just work for themselves now.

All get plenty of work, word by mouth, & have waiting lists.

one friend tutors from her own home with primary aged children & that works really well too. Her & kid at dining table, parents vary between waiting in her lounge or dropping & collecting

I looked in to training to become a driving instructor about six months ago. I spoke to a few people already training and a couple of actual instructors

What put me off in the end was not only the wait times to get your actual tests but from what I can remember there's one test where if you fail it you can't sit it again for a number of years

I simply wasn't prepared to spend thousands and possibly end up with nothing. I liked the flexibility of the job and it's potentially a very good earner but after researching it I decided not to proceed
