Job interview and possibly pregnant

What should I do?!

I have an interview on Thursday for a very exciting role, that will allow me to leave my current profession and get my foot in the door with the civil service. The role is a fixed contract maternity cover.

I am all set to go however, I am also possibly pregnant after 3 missed miscarriages. I have not tested positive yet but given my previous experiences, will test positive by the end of the week if I am pregnant.

I have not told my current employer that I have a Job interview as of yet.

If I am successful at the interview and also pregnant do I

  • stay at my current employer for security and maternity pay
  • start my new job with knowledge that I have yet to have a successful pregnancy.

If you moved, what would you be giving up in terms of May pay? And in terms of flexibility and goodwill (which can be crucial when pregnancy and small children inevitably make you a bit flakey?)

90% for 6 weeks then 50% for 12 weeks before moving to SMP.
New role I would only qualify for SMP I think. It is also a temporary contract which I am happy to take with the possibility of being kept on/ internal opportunities however I'm not sure this would be wise if pregnant

You go to the interview and worry about what to do down the line if they offer it to you. Stress won’t help you hold onto a pregnancy so try not to overthink at this stage. I assume you don’t need to tell current workplace you have an interview?

That's what I was hoping to do. I am in two minds about telling work as if I am pregnant and don't take the job, I'm worried about how that would be perceived by my employer

OP, congratulations on your pregnancy, go for the new job. You are not going to be pregnant forever.

I am not sure if I am pregnant yet, only speculating based off symptoms, dates and past experiences.
If this pregnancy is successful am I being stupid to leave a stable role for a temp position?

I would say for any old random post stay where you are, but for the civil service you would hope they would treat you well in pregnancy. I would also apply for perm internal roles once you are on board. It seems like you really want this new job op - best of luck with it and for a successful pregnancy xx

Thank you. Yes I really want this. I suppose regardless on income, people make pregnancy and life with a new born work! It's just scary walking away from security! X

Good luck with your interview and let us know how you get on! X

I'd go for the interview and see what happens. It will buy yea bit of time.
But if all goes well with you this time
will your employment not come to an end, just as you go on maternity leave?
I'd be concerned about having a job to return to

Pandasnacks · 21/10/2024 22:37

New role you wouldn't qualify for SMP, just maternity allowance so I'd look into that first

justasking111 · 21/10/2024 22:43

I would certainly go for the interview, you may well not get the job, but it will give you some insight.
