Can anyone advise on professional level jobs out there where you can train and be paid while learning on the job?

I need a career change as the field I work in is incredibly competitive, people are fighting over £35k jobs and it's difficult to progress.

Currently going through redundancy, so need short term solutions.

Try the careers advisory service- they should be able to help

Look at Modern Apprenticeships.

Strawberry4Supermoon · 21/10/2024 15:19

Don't know how old you are or where you live, but I would seriously consider TFL (Transport for London) the London Underground. Apprenticeships are on offer and salaries quickly double and then treble. Also graduate fast track. Can't believe the salaries paid there and why more (women) don't get on board. There are career open days just for women (who already work there) to progress and move around.

Thank you, that's really interesting. I'm actually quite interested in the idea of training to be a train driver, and would like to find out more about it. I'm out West though, near the Welsh border. 40s so it would be late retraining.

Try this: https://nationalcareers.service.gov.uk/job-profiles/train-driver

My SIL went from retail to rail transport in North Wales. Salary has gone right up after a few years. Not the same as London, but not bad.

Ah I didn't know about this, thanks for the signpost

I'm also interested in things like property, and design. Possibly speech therapy, though there are no training centres nearby. I've come from an academic type job and am used to working from home, though it would probably do me good to get out.

What appeals about speech therapy? (Am a SALT)

Depends what you need to earn and when.

LeafyGreenSalad · 21/10/2024 18:35

Oh interesting. Personal experience really, I've always struggled with my voice and feel it holds me back sometimes. I'd be interested in learning more about the research and theory behind it. The idea of helping people with confidence and social issues appeals, though perhaps the work is more medical?

That looks brilliant, thanks for suggesting it

Yep that all sounds like a SALT...

Training options: apprenticeships are starting to happen. You're much more likely to be taken on for one if you're already working as an NHS band 4 speech therapy assistant. Or a two year postgraduate Masters, or a four year undergraduate or intercalated Masters degree.

LeafyGreenSalad · 21/10/2024 19:44

Four years is a long time. It might be just a pipe dream. Realistically I'm pay cheque to pay cheque, as I'm single income, and the nearest course is two hours away.

Probation Service, paid to get a degree whilst working there to become a Probation Officer

LeafyGreenSalad · 24/10/2024 20:22

Good suggestion, but I'm not sure it's me. I'll have a look though
