HELP! I can’t decide on a job!

Hello! I need advice that isn’t from my husband or my family. long story short.

I'm due to go back to work from maternity leave in a couple of weeks. I have a full time job but I was looking for another job and landed one!
The problem is…which one to choose. Keep my current job or the new job

New job- pros
-salary increase by about 5k annually
-manager position
-Quick progression

-cons
-shift work patterns one weekend on and one off and one week late finish 10pm one early finish (4pm)

-not very much flexibility in working ours
-work holidays Xmas eve, new year
-on my feet all day

Current job- Pros
-flexible working hours
-office base
-no shift work
-more time with baby and husband
-4k increase after competency is met ( could take up to 1 year)
-wear my own clothes 😂

cons
-salary

I’ve thought about it a million times and still stuck. My son is due to start nursery in the new year and I already know the fees are going to be crazy!

any advice is welcome! Thank you!

Stay in your old job. There is no contest. You will need the flexibility as DC gets older.

theeyeofdoe · 16/10/2024 13:58

Definitely the first one.
nurseries don’t work with shift patterns, you’ll be knackered working til 10!

AdviceNeeded2024 · 16/10/2024 13:59

I assume the first is retail or something similar?

I agree with PP while little one is young and will likely be picking up bugs etc at nursery you’ll need the flexibility, so stay in current role. You can still get an increase in salary from what you’ve written that’s similar for the first year.

That is unless your other half is flexible at work and willing to do pick ups when little one is ill etc, then you could consider the second option, but you’ll be missing out on evenings and weekends at home.

Flexibility is the main one here. Flexibility is priceless.
What would happen if your son was ill? will you able to go and pick him up?
I had lots of calls from the nursery when mine were little - if they have a little one being ill they dont want the rest of the nursery to get it.

There are so many events once he eventuallys starts primary school, nativity, sports day etc how will you feel if you have to miss them? Is there somebody else who would go instead of you.

5k a year extra wouldn’t be enough for me for all the cons in the new job.

If you don't go back to your current job, will you have to pay back any maternity pay?

Sprig1 · 16/10/2024 14:14

Stay where you are.

Thanks everyone! I know what I need to do!

For me that would be a no brainer, I'd stay in the original job

Stay in your current job

No I don’t! I got maternity allowance so I won’t need to pay back anything since they didn’t pay me for maternity leave
