Should I apply for this job?

Seeking some advice on what to do, I’m fairly miserable in my current role. I like my job and the subject area but there’s a constant churn of structural changes, it can be hugely frustrating, nothing gets communicated down to us, I’ve had 5 line managers in 2 years and can count on one hand the number of 1:1s I’ve had in that time so opportunities for development are non-existent.

The pros are I work fully remotely and 0.8 FTE and my team colleagues are lovely. I have 2 small primary aged children and love doing the school run on my day off.

A similar job has come up with my former lovely workplace, my ex-manager runs the team and it sounds like a great role with potential. The cons are:

  • I wouldn’t be working directly for them but for another company permanently seconded (not the end of the world), it’s also remote.
  • It’s full-time. The original company work slightly compressed hours (so I could still do pick up on a Friday) and I’d only consider if it this could be negotiated but that’s not guaranteed.
  • I’ve just found out it’s less pay, my take home would be the same as it is now for 0.8 FTE.
  • The interview process is 3 x 1 hour interviews. I’ve not had an interview in 8 years so am horrifically nervous!

I’ve just had the prescreener call and have to confirm if I want to proceed with the application by end of tomorrow, there’s a good chance I’d get an interview but I’m absolutely gutted about the pay.

Financially we could afford it but I don’t know if it’s worth it. I’m also terribly indecisive!

Hmmm, I work 0.8FTE and am also miserable in my job. But no way would I work full time for the same money. Something else will come up.

I think that what it boils down to and that’s why I’m gutted, there’s not a lot that comes up in my field unfortunately.

Can you negotiate the salary?

Berga · 15/10/2024 18:30

Negotiate! Once you get offered and you know they want you, explain the situation and try to negotiate on hours or pay. Most people would understand why you would do that in the circumstances.

Spangers · 15/10/2024 18:43

They’ve been very clear upfront on the full time aspect (as in told me 3 times so far 😆), part time is not an option, there’s no negotiation because the client it’s seconded to won’t allow it (part time is pretty rare in my industry so that’s not unusual). Otherwise that would be my plan (and how was I got my current role that was advertised as full time). I don’t think there’s much scope for the pay either as they asked me my current salary and warned me it would be less before today when they gave me the details. This all sounds very negative doesn’t it.

More hours for less pay, no way! What if you don't like the job?

RechargeableGnu · 16/10/2024 03:57

It doesn't sound like they are prepared to negotiate with you on anything, this is not a good start.

It tells you what will happen when you request a pay rise / time off / anything that requires a human response.

Walk away.

AnellaA · 16/10/2024 04:33

hi, I’d definitely walk away but if leave it worded that you’re disappointed and if they are unable to hir a candidate they like, but willing to discuss compressed hours so you could do school run say three times a week, you’d still be interested.

isitme111 · 16/10/2024 21:56

Walk away - I can't see that they are offering you anything to make it worth you while.
