Would you stay put or look elsewhere?

hey!

so i have a job, middle management, paying £45k per year. private sector for a relatively well known agency. i am underpaid for the industry, & my 'department' is quite niche and so i have a few worries:

  • underpayment ofc being one - i think i could realistically get £70k upwards elsewhere although the jobs aren't easy to come across/get
  • my dept being so niche means that the longer i manage it, the harder itll be to get more into a 'generalist' role (my niche is capped where i am in any company in terms of seniority although pay rise opportunities are there elsewhere)
  • i think i have v little progression opportunity where i am
  • i would like to branch out a little

the pros are that it can work well around the children, i know what is acceptable etc.

for context, im early mid 30s and this is my first full time role since having my eldest nearly 7 years ago, ive been early a year.

would you stay put knowing that it works for the family but immediate progression is very unlikely (& the longer i stay the more chance of being pigeon holed).

would you look elsewhere for more opportunity/pay at the risk of it not working so well for the family? better the devil you know sort of thing

thanks!

I'm always surprised when people ask whether they should look or stay put.

I'd really encourage you to start 'putting out feelers' and then evaluate any actual offers that come along.

Moving jobs is the most reliable way to increase your earnings. If your role really would pay double elsewhere, then certainly find one of those roles.
