Returning to work

Hi everyone. Just wondering what new mums are doing in terms of returning to work? I’ve still got a few months but I’ve always wanted to stay at home with my child. I’m grateful as we’re doing ok financially and I’ve managed to save too. I’d like to stay home, spend time with the little one and then go back to work when she’s older. The only reason I would need to go back is to save up for a bigger house. My husband is happy for me to stay home too. The only other thing is doing something for my own state of mind. I was thinking perhaps I could do a remote job and still have the little one with me. The wage I’m getting is pretty decent and I know I won’t get that anywhere else starting from scratch but then again I wouldn’t get that wage again as I wouldn’t be going back full time. Just feeling bit confused at the moment.

Any suggestions? What did you all do?

You could train and become a childminder or work in a nursery so you can be around your child and still be earning.

I went back to work 4 days. I found it hard with a 10 month old, but now she's 2 and a half I'm so happy I kept my job. Toddlers are hard work! I'd be miserable as a SAHM.

But you appreciate that even working remotely you won't have your child with you as you expressed in your post? You may have more time with her because of no commuting but you will still need childcare. No employer is going to agree to you working as well as looking after a child - and nor should they, it's not fair to anyone - you, your employer or your child.

@AlohaRose Thanks for your reply. When looking into remote jobs as I have been doing, there are options for SAHM. Jobs specifically aimed at mums which are flexible. You choose your hours and days of the week you can work. This specific criteria is listed by employers therefore no room for disappointment for anyone (employers or myself). Opportunities like these are perfect for SAHM mums as I can work around my partner’s timings and I can work weekends so my little one doesn’t miss out either! :)

@NewMummyyy just go into it with your eyes wide open. Jobs that advertise lots of flex/great for SAHMs are often multi-level marketing schemes or 'commission based' which rarely works out to even minimum wage. If it sounds too good to be true it likely is unfortunately!
