Would I be mad to jump ship?

I have a stressful middle management role in the NHS. It's hard to get out of bed and get myself there, mental health is suffering, family time is suffering and I can't settle at all in the evenings thinking about the pile of work I have waiting for me the next day. I've been in the NHS for years however and the sick pay, maternity etc is good and is what keeps me there to be honest.

I have seen a role advertised for a HR advisor for a small private company. Pay is half of what I am on however it's only 20 hours a week and I have every skill they require. Would I be mad to consider leaving behind a career for a lesser role with less pay? Financially we could take the hit, however if I was to have more family the maternity pay would likely be terrible compared to what I would get in the NHS.

It's never the right time to plan for a family whether you're in full time work or part time work. If you're job is making you that ill, I would go for the other job. I'm hoping to do something similar and have realised that I would rather be happy now. You learn to adapt to your new salary and like you say, you can afford to take the hit. Just go for it 🙂

@Soccermumamir I've applied for the role, I got two glasses of wine deep and thought fuck it. Surely there is a company/organisation out there that will value my experience, expertise and transferable skills 🙏

Apply. If you get offered the role, then you can see how you feel and make a decision.

If you don’t apply then you aren’t even giving yourself a chance.
