To think there must be easier ways to make a living?!

I’m so fed up of the workload of teaching which I have been doing for a number of years now. It’s relentless and a job I don’t feel you can ever truly switch off from or be ‘finished’ workload wise.

Has anyone made the switch from teaching to something completely different? Ideally with a higher salary but more importantly with less stress and take home work?

What other options are out there for former teachers? I’m desperate to leave but need to earn at least the same to stay afloat!

Which age group do you teach? (And if secondary what do you specialise in?)

What do you enjoy about it most - as that might help identify what might suit you best if you do move on - e.g. training roles within the public or private sectors might be a good fit...

What's your approx salary now? It might be that you will end up taking a bit of a cut and retraining but can build up more quickly to earn more with different qualifications/experience.

Just over 40k and I teach secondary humanities.

I enjoy the actual teaching, that part of the job has always been the reason I have stayed and what I love. The constant assessments, new rules from a stream of new SLT and the general admin side (hours spent marking books for students I see once or twice a week, so literally hundreds of books!) is making my mental health suffer massively. It’s never ending and feels like my life is not my own!

It could be worth trying a change of school before completely throwing in the towel - things like excessive marking required by SLT is not the case everywhere. Getting advice from others on how they manage that - techniques to minimise time required.

Sounds like exam marking may not necessarily be for you but that could be another route to look at as can be quite well paid.

If you can afford to do a few sessions with a life /career coach to help you assess what your finding hard and whether teaching is the right place to stay but e.g. in a different school or teasing out what you would want in another role.

Realistically it's hard to change career without a dip in salary but something like corporate training might be an option. But would it be as fulfilling for you if your subject/young people learning is what is motivating about teaching for you? (A coach would look help you take a step back and reflect on these sorts of questions).

A friend of mine was in a similar position but a few sessions with a coach made her realise teaching is right for her for now - somehow exploring what she really wanted and the options helped her move her mindset.
