any advice or just support much appreciated, feel have bitten off more than I can chew - 50-60 hour working week due to taking on a course (Level 7) that work wanted me to do

hello

I work full-time and have recently started a very intensive Level 7 course which work have persuaded me to do and are contributing part of. This involves:

  • a 10 hour round trip commute once a week (after working in the morning) to attend a 4 hour tutorial by train, getting home at midnight
  • regular written essays and other assignments
  • extensive background reading and research
  • additional online tutorials twice a month all day Saturday

The problem is I am still expected to do all the other duties of my job and am also being given overtime for which I have no choice, on top (unpaid).

I am now working a 50-60 hour week in total and am really struggling with keeping on top of everything, exhaustion and also an increase in frequency and severity of my migraine which has been absolutely awful.

I have spoken to my line manager 3 times and asked for support as I am absolutely exhausted but so far but he just said "let's see how it goes". That was 3 weeks ago.

Before I started, I made it clear I was concerned about work-life balance (they know of my history with chronic migraine) and how I would be able to fit everything in and was reassured that I would be fully-supported.

I am not sure where I stand. I am grateful of course they are contributing, but they were very keen for me to do the course. My line manager has repeatedly told me it will be a significant boost for the company if more people have this qualification. I feel I have been forced into a corner and have no way out.

Am I just supposed to suck it up because they are making a contribution? I am not sure where I stand.

any suggestions or just a few words of encouragement gladly accepted.

Why on earth did you say you'd do it?

What will you get out of it?

They should be giving you time off work to complete it.

My BIL is doing a similar level 7 qualification (NHS) and works 4 days but paid for 5

Good question :(

I will get this qualification. I had been feeling in a but of a rut and it seemed like a good way to take on a fresh challenge.
The discussion I had with them prior made me believe I would be fully-supported and I wouldn't be given extra, additional duties but it's not turning out to be the case.
