Furthering your career with young DC

Built up a really good career previously in industry and recently moved over to working for an agency and advising clients (I know people usually go the other way!) as I was very fed up in my previous job and my boss was unbearable to be around.

long story short, the new job is not for me, it pays well, is flexible, not stressful and I have a great boss. However I find it very dull and I have had glowing reviews but I’m not really using my speciality.

I have been approached to go back in house to what I used to do but at a very senior level. Am I mad to even consider this? It would be flexible but am I mad to consider the unknown? My children are preschool and primary.

It’s hard to say but the crucial factor is if you have a partner or support to help with the kids. I’ve gone back full-time recently and have a partner who runs a business so he’s working evenings and weekends as well as Mon-Fri.

We’re struggling to be honest. The stress when one of the kids gets ill is immense in terms of taking time off work etc. The kids are playing up as in wrap around care and they’re shattered.. I feel ideally one partner needs a job with some flexibility /a degree of good will (ie they’ve already proved themselves) to pick up the slack with young kids.

But it’s do-able, especially if you’re senior and will have flexibility. Do you have family support? If you’re itching for a new challenge I’m sure it can be done, but if it’s an opportunity that will still be available in a year or two and it would put you under a lot of strain I’d maybe hold off. If you’re keen to make it work I’m sure you will though
