Motivation help

LemongrassLollipop · 03/10/2024 00:01

I'm looking for help with motivation with work. I put in the hours, even extra, but the output doesn't match the effort. I am missing deadlines and targets and know this needs to change.

I've tried all the tips on being productive like pomodoro technique etc and understand the theory. My problem is the doing.

Things are difficult at home due to recent split with husband and grief following my mum dying last year. This has massively knocked my confidence. All the childcare is still on me bar two pickups a week.

I am close to a colleague at work and she knows all this but otherwise I don't have a social circle or support network.

I want to do well. I also wonder if I should want it any longer.

That sounds like a lot OP. It’s not surprising that you’re not on top of things.

I think you could be aiming for good enough given everything that’s been going on for you.

However it’s probably easier to keep this job than get another. So I would be working out what my tasks were and blocking out time for them on my calendar. Personally I’ve found Freedom (computer internet blocker) good for not getting distracted during work time. (Though it’s my own laptop).

Don’t over schedule and stick to the achievable in the near future. I’d also have boundaries on work time. Don’t work into the evening and not be really doing anything. Instead maybe get some exercise.

How about seeing your GP for some CBT?

@Changed18 it is a lot!
thanks for replying. I'm struggling to stay upbeat and your kind words have helped.

I went into the office today rather than wfh. I think the routine and change of scenery of leaving the house is needed. I chatted to colleagues and went for a walk at lunch. It felt nice.
My friend at work has been promoted and will now be my interim boss. She knows my position well and I think that will help.

It's hard to do stuff in the evenings when I feel I ought to be working to get up to date but I'm too tired then feel guilty.

I'm going to write out my tasks as you suggested then just work through them.

@Bollylops I went to my GP and she put me in touch with a counselor. I had 6 free sessions all on the phone. I think it helped because if nothing else, I could off load on someone.

I think I’d go into the office fairly regularly if that’s an option. Sounds like you have a plan. Hope things start to improve, even if only slowly and gradually,@LemongrassLollipop
