am thinking abour changing my job when i have finished my maternity leave (although i haven;t started it yet)

these were three of the shops in the shopping centre near me that i don' think i would mind working in but what are they like to work for and what is the pay like

am cleaning at the moment and get £6 per hour so would really like it to be similar but i suppose i could do more hours

any help or advice would be most welcomed thanks

hiya must sleep

i worked at tesco, and the money and benefits and subsidised meals were gd !

i think if you are looking for a job where you dont take the stresses home with you IYKWIM, then retails is great, my BF worked at newlook and you get a clothing allowance and discount

i think money wise it would be about the same butobviously less hard work! HTH

thanks the only thing about where i work now is not really having tomake an effort clothes wise which is why even though i am qute young i wouldn;t bother going for a job at one of the trendier shops as i would have a panic attack attack about what to wear everyday

i' thinking next as apart from during the sale it's unjumble saley and you just have to look smart which i can do (i suppose)

plus the discount would be handy!!

Mustsleep my sister and I used to work at M&S (different stores), and it was great. They do s good staff discount, which is useful for clothes, and brilliant 75% off food that's going out of date tghat day - stick it in the freezer and it's fine. My sister reckons that on top of her salary she was also saving around £40 a week on food, and eating way better than they would have otherwise. Also good working atmosphere (in my experience), good staff training etc etc. Am actually contemplating it after maternity leave as well, despite v expensive degree and financial training

I worked in retail for a long time and would say avoid Debenhams and Next - high pressure to sell and push account cards etc. From friends, I'd say Markies was a better bet. I've also heard Tesco is good.

nickytwotimes · 24/04/2008 10:14

Oh, re: pay, It'd be around the same as you are getting right now.

mustsleep · 24/04/2008 10:18

thanks, there's not a tescos near me asda and sainsburys near me say they want you to be available to work weekends which i just cannot do

have my mat leave to go on yet though and can have a good old search around then

It could be tough to find a retail job that is weekdays only! Most expect you to be available on Saturdays. Fingers crossed, though.

Only have second hand experience with Next, but I work with someone who left our local branch because she felt they put too much pressure on her to work extra unsociable hours, even though they knew she had huge problems getting childcare. All members of staff are expected to do the 5am starts for the sales, for example. However, it could just be our local one rather than a general thing. Most retail places expect people to work weekends unfortunately, but it's always worth trying to negotiate. Apply anyway, it's good practice and if they want you, they might be flexible (worked for me )

I managed to get a pretty cushy job with M&S - I worked in the staff canteen, so was quite able to do reglar shifts (no weekends) and wasn't expected to do early starts/late finishes at sale time or christmas. iirc I got paid something in the vicinity of £6.50 p/h, but that was ages ago, and i got a bit extra because it was an out of town store.

ooh that souns good might have to try m and s first then, i do have a catering back ground so that might come in!!

I worked for Debenhams 13 years ago, in the office. Had to make tannoy announcements which was fun. They were fine as employers.
