CV help

I've not updated my CV for nearly 30 years. What do I include? Is there a website that could help me?

I've been a teacher all my working career so not a clue what to include in a CV. I want to go into something totally different, administration, charity work... who knows?

I know I have tons of transferable skills but it's getting those across to potential employers.

I can’t tell you what to include except that you will need to tailor it to suit each job. An application for admin will stress different skills to a charity worker.

My learning is :

  1. No need to put CV, full address etc in it. Just name, town and contact details (I set up a new Gmail address to handle my job search).
  2. Match your CV to the job spec - use their words. This basically means a new CV for every job application. I have a master doc with everything on which I pick and mix from
3.Emphasis skills - again matching the job spec. - if a bot is being used to filter then hopefully by using the same language you will get through the first sift.
  1. Take out any fancy stuff - like line separators, colours etc.
  2. Plain is good, just use bullets, bold and underline.
  3. One page is good, but certainly not more than two.

There are some template websites out there which to be honest weren't brilliant!

The job centre coach was actually the best help, although I was a bit sceptical to start.

When it comes to interviews plan everything round the STAR method of planning/answering.
