Lost my job today, completely out of the blue

I can't wrap my head around it. Today was a normal work day... I was in the middle of working on various projects I have lined up for this week and I had a call out of the blue from HR. They said they are getting rid of me with immediate effect due to company restructuring. My role is going to be shared out with several colleagues - the colleagues I was asked to run a training session for last week...

I have been put on gardening leave. I was then locked out of my IT accounts. No chance to say bye to anyone. Teams messages and emails left unanswered.

There were no issues with my performance, my manager was in the call and said that it has nothing to do with my performance and the decision was above him. It makes no sense. Work recently paid for me to go on an expensive course, they had work lined up for me.

I cannot make sense of it at all.

@789pm "I'm in such a low and bitter headspace that it feels like people are relishing in telling other posters this - I know you're not and are just trying to correct others."
I'm sorry you feel this way about my post as it was in no way meant to make you feel any worse (and as you realise, it wasn't actually directed at you). It's great that you already knew what your rights were (which wasn't clear until your latest post), but incorrect advice given by others should be corrected as there are other MNetters reading this thread who might inadvertently rely on it. (Having volunteered as an Adviser with CA for almost 10 years I've met too many clients who've come in saying "I know my rights" and "My mate's told me ....." and I've been in the unfortunate position of having to gently explain to them why they and/or their mates are misinformed.)
I'm sincerely sorry for the position you find yourself in - it would knock anyone's confidence. However, you should remember that you were a competent and conscientious employee and a good colleague - this is evidenced by the fact that your former colleagues have contacted you and expressed their anger and sadness at your departure. As others have already posted; this wasn't personal at all - it's just business (and I've seen it happen enough times - and sometimes been privy to the reasons - to know this to be true). It seems to me, from the explanation they've given you, that they've found a more cost-effective way of achieving their aims - and this is all too often the reason in business (the bottom line is everything!).
It's very early days and you're still feeling raw, which is totally understandable, but I'm a firm believer that everything happens for a reason. There is something better waiting for you - there really is - and you will find it. You will be the same good colleague and competent, conscientious employee for a new employer where I'm sure you will excel, and the feelings you have now will fade to almost nothing. Try to remember this to carry you forward. I wish you the very best of luck for the future.

I’m sorry. I’m not surprised you’re feeling low. I hope you know that this isn’t anything you’ve done. You’ve been unlucky.

I think the reason so many posters are pointing out the error in all the ignorant although well meaning posts saying ‘fight this! What they’ve done is not allowed!’ is that it’s not helpful for you to be told to fight a fight you won’t win and that misinformation could cause further harm to others too.

Exactly this.

I know of a big company where they have just got rid of over 200 people ( around a quarter of workforce) and yet are very profitable- in several cases they've got rid of older very experienced higher earners on the basis of role not needed and then quite quickly brought in younger much cheaper less experienced people and given them new job titles. I'm afraid this is the kind of shit that goes on these days

I'm sorry you're feeling this way. The way it was so out of the blue will be a big shock. Take some time for yourself. You have done nothing wrong. Keep in touch with your colleagues and I hope the next opportunity is just around the corner x
