Which option would you pick?

Option A - essentially a promotion with better employment prospect, 10k more monetary wise but it will involve extensive travel and staying in hotels (3/5 days) all had to be funded by me (est. at around 200/week).

Option B - stay where I'm, limited career progression and training opportunities, wfh once a week, no travel and alternative accommodation required.

No commitments at home so Option A is appealing to me. But the cost of travel and accommodation is bugging me. At the moment I'm unsure if the opportunity to advance will outweigh the cost. However I am aware that I'm not getting any younger. The time to put in extra effort for my career is now, or never. I do not want to wait years down the line regretting the chance.

Help me choose?

Well A isn't a pay rise as you will spend it all on travel and accommodation.

So what else is it about job A that attracts you to it? Better progression prospects? A company that will look good on your CV? An area of work you want to move into?
Or do you just want a change from your current job? Have you been job hunting for a long time?
Will you be ok with that amount of travel or will you find it wearing after a few months?

Just some things to think about that might help you decide if this is the right move

Option A as a stepping stone to better things.

Stay where you are and keep looking for a better role.

TheFlis · 29/09/2024 11:01

Why would you have to fund the travel? That seems very odd, are you sure that company and role is legit?

200 a week will wipe out your pay rise completely.

Tarantella6 · 29/09/2024 11:02

Option A for 2-3 years to then make you even more employable and able to make another step up? Or keep looking - option B doesn't sound worth doing, so maybe you need Option C?

Oh hang on, I didn't see you have to pay for accommodation!

Is this a hybrid role you're choosing to travel to, or a role in which travel and accommodation is required no matter where you live?

I thought the same!

Assuming this isn't business travel but rather you needing to stay close to the office, you should try to negotiate that they fund the hotel at least one night per week.

Otherwise if it's business travel, they should be funding it all!

I'm seeking role down south for better career prospects (I'm living up north at the moment. The travel might wear me down eventually but hopefully by then I could either secure a better role up here or move down entirely.

It is a role with a company that I really want to work for - pioneer in the field I work in.

I've literally reached the ceiling of my current position.
