Do you think workplace diversity (of approach) is actually a bad thing?
I've been mulling this over due to a challenging period at my current employer where people work in very different ways, have very different personal drivers, communication styles and working patterns. Plus organisationally different departments objectives don't align.
It feels like achieving anything here is really hard. Comms need to be in lots of different ways. People don't align on the way forward so lots of time debating, organising meetings is a nightmare so often things need to go ahead and people need to be updated later. It is in a creative industry, but most of it's employees aren't actually creative.
The organisation does champion diversity (in all senses), but this isn't about race, sexuality, disability etc etc. It is about working styles and approaches.
I'm comparing to some previous corporate and government employers which had a 'type' and specified ways of working. None have ever been perfect, but the common approach and workplace culture meant that people knew how things worked (or how to get around the bad process!) so got on with stuff.
I'm considering my future and starting to look elsewhere. Some very successful employers do have a very particular way of working. I'm pretty flexible in ways of working so thinking a more rigid working style place may suit me better.
Interested in other people's thoughts.
