How does ssp/sick note work when you’ve been back in work in between

Dh went docs last Monday with a really bad sore throat he’d had. Docs sent him a&e last Monday, he had intravenous antibiotics at a&e and gave him weeks supply of oral antibiotics but said he would prob need more from docs for following week, he went back to work on Tuesday as through the felt well enough but felt terrible through day and after so wasn’t well enough to go back although he lasted full day. He works in an industrial warehouse so it’s quite physical, dusty and they apparently have to shout to each other a lot. Was off work Wednesday to Friday. Put in for antibiotics on Friday and doc made emergency appointment as wanted to see him again, he’s also had ent appointment at hospital for this Friday so whatever it is the medical professionals seem to be taking quite seriously rather it it being just a sore throat take some lozengers.

anyway my query, he doesn’t feel well enough to go into work today again. When do we count the sicks days from for the purposes of needing a sick note is it from last wednesday or last Monday? He thinks he will be well enough to go in tomorrow but I’m not so sure. To complicate things further he has holiday booked for Wednesday as I have to be in work early that day and we have an autistic child we have to drive 10 miles to school. How does the days holiday affect the ssp/ sick note situation? Does clock then start again from the Thursday if he’s still not well enough be to back? He has hospital appointment Friday so is on about having a days holiday for that so he doesn’t have to rush around getting back in time

For sick note purposes it would be the last day he went off sick, so Wednesday if he was in work Tuesday.

The holiday day should be cancelled if he's off sick and he should get the day back

If he has as holiday though he would get full pay whereas ssp is not much? What I can see happening if we are not careful is that the pay will be at ssp rates but they’ll still take the holiday day off

For my place, also an office and warehouse facility within the nhs, this would be 2 separate issues of sickness though it should be taken into consideration that he did try to go back to work and it is the same problem. Sicknote would cover the holiday and it should be SSP and holiday should be unused and returned to him

Sorry another question we’ve been lucky enough to have never had much sick leave so we are abit in the dark on this. With the holiday day this Wednesday would he have to put in a request to cancel it or should it happen automatically if he’s off on sick either side

My immediate manager would cancel it automatically and return it to my quota and he would cover the leave with the sicknote. If we are off sick, the day we return we have a back to work meeting to make sure we are well and that work did not cause the sickness. At this point i would have said i was not 100% and unsure whether i should have came back and it would have been noted on my work revord. We are allowed 3 bouts of sickness in a year before a written warning. My manager is a really nice guy though. We also get full pay when on sick so makes life a bit easier

Oh god he wil have had three bouts thus year then as he had to have a few days off earlier in year as he got a lump on his eye and couldn’t see properly, then these two bouts now. It’s not work that caused it but the hospital want to try and get the swelling down through antibiotics so they can see what’s underneath as they want to rule out cancer, but the day he went back made it worse, so although it’s not caused by work work is aggravating it

And rhat should be taken into considerstion for sure. This is just from my workplace POV of course, and probably just to weed out the ones that say they have a cold etc. We had a girl who used to ring in all the time with minor ailments then she worked out she got paid the same for being off 5 days as opposed to 1 or 2 as no sicknote needed. Sicknote is the puller for me. GP obviously thinks time off is needed. And they sound genuine reasons to be off. I suggest he speaks to his line manager to see what's what and my manager would be very understanding about this...Would hope his is too

Actually come to think of it, covid times, My work colleague was off and came back a day in between. She had issues slightly longer term than standard, if you know what I mean. She was off another 2 weeks. My manager just cancelled her day in and counted it as 1 bout of sickness. Always best to ask his manager.

He’s line manager is abit of an arse and thinks he’s pulling a fast one as it’s just a sore throat

Also he doesn’t get sick pay just statutory so we don’t want them to cancel his day in and count as sick as he’ll lose a days pay

Depends how efficient and good his work place is (sounds pretty bad from what you've described) so he needs to make sure he cancels the holiday day. And as pointed out if he doesn't cancel it, uses a days holiday then goes off sick again that is three separate incidents of sickness which would hit a 'trigger' in many organisations
