Etiquette re applying for a new post in house

I've not been in this position before so I’m wondering if anyone can give me any advice.

A new role has come up in my organisation that I’d like to apply for. If I was successful it would mean working in a different department with new colleagues and line manager etc. My current line manager and I have a great relationship shop and if it wasn’t for this post coming up I would have no plans to leave at all.

Do I let them know I am applying for the role? Do I not say anything and only let them know when/if I get an interview or am (touch wood) offered the role?

I would hate for them to find out I had applied without me notifying them first but I am also concerned that if I tell them, go for interview and then don’t get the role that it might make things uncomfortable and I’d like to avoid that. Any advice greatly appreciated!

In my organisation it’s the norm to discuss with your line manager and they would generally support and advise you. It’s only applications for external jobs that you’d keep quiet about.

At my work if you apply for an internal vacancy, your line manager is contacted by HR to make sure they know about the application and to give some feedback on you as part of the application process - so you definitely have to tell them / get them on board first! I think the only exceptions are if you contact HR first with reasons that isn't appropriate, but that's the normal course of action.

Thanks @mushpush - that’s exactly the sort of situation I am trying to avoid. It does sound like being upfront about it is the right course of action.

I didn't know this and made the mistake a fair few years ago, horrendously embarrassing 😂

Definitley tell them beforehand, far better to be up front than have them be contacted by HR or the hiring manager

A good line manager will want to support you through the recruitment process, perhaps do some interview coaching etc. They should also recognise that people don't stay in post forever - internal mobility really should be encouraged

Definately let them know. Also, explain what you stated in your post, that you do love your current role and in two minds whether to apply but it's great career progression etc.

They'll understand and will probably support you
