Just been made redundant

Hi all,

We the title just about says it all. I've just been made redundant.

I was unhappy in my job and had a terrible boss. Reason for redundancy is my client will no longer be working with my company, they are phasing things out slowly.

My boss was being highly critical over a few months, so I think she was hoping I'd leave off my own accord which I didn't.

I've been offered a settlement package which isn't too bad, almost 6 months pay.

But understandable I'm worried. I'm a full time single parent, my job was fully remote so I could collect me DD from school. And I was paid well for what I do. Being a parent has never stopped me from doing a good job. But I'm concerned I won't find a job which pays so well and is flexible. Plus I turn 49 in a few weeks time. I feel I'm up against it.

I have a good CV, but I'll be up against much younger people 😟

At the moment I'm feeling really anxious and worried about the future.

I am sorry to hear you have been made redundant. Have you spoken to the client about why they are stepping away from your company?

I don’t think your age will be an issue if you don’t make it one. But, as mentioned upthread, enthusiasm and confidence are so important. Practically, you may need to check out childcare if you are planning to work full time in an office or hybrid role and they may want you in the office more at the beginning.

Given you didn’t like the job or the manager, it may be it works out better in the end. Clearly, try not to badmouth your employer (people will think you could badmouth them) although they will probably read between the lines and do keep looking for work until the new contract is in the bag - better to have more than one offer than waste time hanging out for one which then falls through after multiple interviews.

I'm in a similar boat having been made redundant recently except without the large redundancy package. We never used to consider age when hiring though, unless someone was young and appeared to be very immature. At 49 it wouldn't even be on the radar, if you had a good cv and came across well in interviews we'd hire you without a second thought.

Sorry to hear this. Have faith, it'll be fine.
Last Christmas I had a sham redundancy (fake one) where they pretended to move the finance dept to a much cheaper country. I was offered 3 jobs within a month and took this one which the people are really nice and the job easy enough. Good luck, your'll be fine.

Any openings with the client? Or will the client be taking the work to another company?

I was made redundant at age 50 after 21 years in the same job. I got another, far better, more flexible job within 3 weeks of being given the news. A year later I can honestly it was a blessing in disguise. You can do it!

I got made redundant at 60, that was def a problem! Don’t know how long you were in your current role but you need to get up to date on the systems they use for CV filtering as the trickiest part is actually getting your cv in front of a person who would see it. Started a new role a month ago (took 4 months to get there). It’s a step down in both level and salary but I was previously director on 6 figure so I’m still on 80k and with less stress and responsibility.

I get bored though so change jobs every 5 years on average. Moved at 49 and 54, both slightly sideways but with rapid promotions so I don’t think 49 should be a problem.

use the outsourcing (is it right management? If so msg me and I can give some tips on getting the best out of it) and get LinkedIn premium for a while. Make sure your profile reflects your skillset and does a bit of selling for you.

not sure what area you work in but there’s some companies which are way more flexible, you may not get fully remote but my current one I go into the office only when I need to, I do one day a week on average but they wouldn’t care if it was one day a month tbh.

it’s not a great situation but try and keep positive and don’t panic!

I'm not allowed to work for my client, it's written in my settlement 😛

That may not be legal - a settlement or contract can not restrict you such that you are unable to work - if you are discussing the settlement with an HR bid / lawyer 1 make that a central part of your discussion

Anxiouswaffle · 20/09/2024 04:26

Make sure you speak to a solicitor as well before signing anything- your company should pay - you may be able to increase settlement for example if there is discrimination of some kind
