Career advice

Hello! I'm 28 years old and my highest qualifications to date are my GCSEs . I feel at times like it's too late for me to begin a career. I would really welcome any career advice especially from people who have started careers later in life and turned things around for themselves. Due to health reasons I haven't worked in a number of years and I am hoping to go into university but not yet sure what course to study. Any career inspiration would be welcomed like most people I'm hoping to seek a well paying job and be able to take care of me and my family.

What are you good at? What do you enjoy? Really hard to give generic career advice!

However, 28 is definitely not too late (unless you want to be a professional footballer / gymnast).

What subjects did you like best at school? If you like science and maths the answers might be different to if you don’t for eg. It’s absolutely not too late, mumsnet is full of stories of people who changed direction at all ages. Is you’ve had health issues you might have lived experience that you could draw on in applications. Or maybe you want to do something completely different to that. Maybe try volunteering/getting some work experience in something you might want to train for as it’s a big investment of time and money.
Degree apprenticeships are often not easy to get but there are lower level apprenticeships eg in NHS or large companies eg engineering . I’d just keep asking people what they like about their jobs and how they got into it and what other routes in there might be. Local FE colleges have courses, if you browse their website you might get some ideas, good luck!

Thank you for taking the time to reply to my messages. As I'm not sure what to do yet I was hoping I could ask people what they do for work and how they got into it. So I can compile a range of career options.

@BlueHiker you need the Mature Study and Retraining board! You’ll see so many accounts of people in just this situation (or older people starting again). There are sure to be some threads that suggest a way forward:
