Was wondering if any of you swapped careers after kids and if so what is it you do? I have been lucky enough to take two big career breaks for each of my children (big age gap) and stay at home with them until they started school, but now my little one has been at school a while I feel well and truly out of the game! I used to work a corporate job, but one thing I know for sure is I don’t want to go back to doing that! I currently work 10hrs a week in a very easy admin role in the charity sector. I really enjoy it and it fits in really well around school hours and I can flex in the holidays to do less hours even so it’s the perfect setup for now. Problem is my husband keeps encouraging me to think about what’s next, and if I am honest despite enjoying my little job it’s not something I envisage doing until I retire, and I also want to be able to shoulder more of the financial burden as my kids get older (as I’m finding they get more and more expensive!) Problem is I have absolutely no idea what I might enjoy.

Things I know for certain:
I want to have flexibility around hours especially in the school holidays
I don’t want to work in a school or with children.
I don’t want to work in the NHS
I would like to use my brain more to solve problems
I would like to feel that I am doing some good in the world by either helping people or making a difference to the planet.
I am not very creative or good at making things
I am good with computers/maths/problem solving
I can commit to some form of reeducation or
training
I like the idea of being self employed and doing something alongside my current job.

so with all of that in mind could anyone suggest any potential avenues to explore?
thank you

Watching in interest!

I'm in a very similar position, only slightly behind you as I have another year until my smallest in in school. Pressure is coming from DH as to what I'll do next year when the kids are all in education (though I counter with...if I get a FT job who does pick ups and covers holidays as we have zero family nearby and he doesn't like the idea of them being in before/after school and constant holiday clubs!) Currently doing 22 hours a week in an admin role in the charity sector; which, as is typical of charity, involves way more work than the pay would suggest!! But I like it.

Few friends of mine have done coding courses and gone into that. They all seem to now work fully remote, fully flexible jobs working similar hours to me with less of a workload and making more money. Making it seem very attractive. If you're not currently employed there are often free courses available too.
