representative on redudancy consultation meeting

there is a redundancy process ongoing at my employer. Thus far I am not affected but a colleague has been told she is at risk and has a 'redundancy consultation meeting' tomorrow. She has been told she can bring a colleague along and asked me. I accepted but i am wondering how I can best help - I am due to meet her beforehand to dsicuss but wondering if anyone has thoughts.

We think there are less than 20 redundancies so not a full month long consultation. I suspect decisions have been made and the company is going through the motions and there is no real scope to change their minds but keen to help in any way possible.

Make sure she has a written copy of the company redundancy policy, esp relating to entitlement to money. Clarify the notice period of her role. Ask whether holiday will be converted into additional pay. Confirm who will provide her with references and when. Ensure she has a contact for P45 & P60 provision. Ask whether she is eligible to apply preferentially for any internal vacancies (even if she doesn’t want to stay).

It's highly unlikely a consultation will change the ultimate outcome, but it's a chance to understand redeployment options if they exist and support available.

I would just take notes for her and make sure important information has been covered. From Acas:

"The consultation is a chance for your employer to talk about the changes they're proposing and why you're at risk of redundancy.

You can ask them questions and make suggestions on how redundancies could be reduced or avoided altogether.

You could discuss:

- ways to avoid or reduce redundancies

- how people will be selected for redundancy

- any issues you have with the process

- time off to look for a new job or training

- how the organisation can restructure or plan for the future"

How your employer must consult - Your rights during redundancy - Acas

Your employer must consult you about the planned redundancies.

I've done this. I took notes mainly but my main role was to take my colleague out to the pub immediately afterwards to get her out of the office.
