Boss sending ranty emails whilst I’m on annual leave

I know, I know, I shouldn’t have checked my work emails whilst I have two weeks off. However my out of office wasn’t apparently working so I logged on to double check I had it implemented.

I noticed an email sent today from my boss to me regarding a file I had been working on, I had accidentally forgotten to send someone on my team a document on Friday. Not the biggest issue in the world as my colleague can access my files with no problem. My boss has obviously got wind of it and has sent me an essay through email accusing me of doing it deliberately, about how pissed off he is about it, about how much extra work I’ve caused the team. It’s all completely uncalled for and has really upset me. He then sent another email saying how unimpressed he is of me. It’s ridiculously over the top and it just comes across at him ranting at me. In both emails he has cc’d in my entire team so they all got the pleasure of reading it.

I feel sick to my stomach as he regularly goes off ‘on one’ and it’s usually in my direction.

I know I’m going to dwell on this now. I’m not sure how to handle it when I return. I want to be professional but I’m sick of being on the end of these rants, always through email.

I would forward that email to HR and tell them how distressed and upset you are that he should send that email, not only while you are on annual leave, but that he should copy it into everybody else as well.

I'd had horrible bosses for over 5 years, had forgotten what the alternative was. I changed jobs and had a reasonable, rational boss for the first time in years and couldn't believe what a difference it made to my life. Everything was just better, even the bad things were much better.

fortunate in a way you didnt receive it on your first day back from leave.
forward it to yourself
delete it from your work inbox
make plans on how to deal with this

This sounds like good advice to me, @RightSedFred.

@JH20000 hopefully all your team will have looked at those messages from your boss, and thought the same thing we have - what a cunt he is. I hope you find a new, better job soon - and it would be even better if his emails make other members of the team jump ship before they come into his firing line, and he ends up losing more than just one good team member over this!

I would respond….id be copying in his management team, his boss and HR too.

I do tend to have an attitude though.

Ditto.

Forward a copy of that email to your personal account

blackpooolrock · 23/09/2024 10:55

Send an email back to him and copy in HR and his boss. I would point out that all data you are using is on a shared drive everyone had access to but as my manager he should know that instead of blaming me for things being late.

Send DadJokes’s suggestion to all inc boss and their boss now.
Then if boss boss has t done anything about it, forward the whole thing to HR when you get back to work so you know boss has no advance warning

If you are considering leaving anyway then you could go to his boss about his behaviour?

Also, if your team member can access the file and if it created lots of work for the team surely your team member has meddled here?? They could have spoken up but chose not to...
